The life of Ted Chandler, a wildlife photographer

You probably know who Ted Chandler is and have seen one of his photos. He spoke to People Magazine
about his 20-year career close-up with wildlife. This is part of the interview:

Where did your interest in wildlife come from?

I grew up in Canada with nature right there around us. I just had to step outside and I could see all manner
of mammals, reptiles, birds and amphibians. One day, my best friend Henry, took me to see a big bear
fishing in a nearby stream with her cub… from a safe distance, of course. Henry passed me his camera so
that I could zoom in. It was great to watch them so closely and I never wanted to forget. I pressed the
shutter in the camera and that is when I decided what I wanted to do for the rest of my life.

Is it easy to find work? I imagine it is quite difficult.

It is at first when no one knows your name and you don’t have any contacts at magazines. Over time your
reputation grows. You ask local shops to put up some of your photos or sell some of your cards… you know,
anything to make a living.

What is your favourite animal?

Well, I love dogs. I have four at home. But when I have to take a photo I love orang-utans. Their name
means ‘person of the forest’ in Malay and you can see why. They are so similar to us.

A United Nations study reported that 18 per cent of greenhouse gases come from farm animals
such as cows, sheep and chickens. That is more than all of the world’s cars, trains and planes
put together. We use 36 per cent of the world’s grain to feed farm animals, yet a quarter of the
people in the world do not have enough food. If we made food for people from the grains
instead, there would be enough for everyone.

Other people go meat-free because they feel it is wrong to kill animals. Animals feel pain and
fear. Many farmed animals are kept in poor conditions with little space and no time outdoors. In
the UK, around 990 million farmed animals are killed for food each year.

With so many supermarkets and restaurant now offering vegetarian and vegan goods, it is
easier than ever to give up or reduce the amount of meat we eat. Why not try a few meat-free
days a week – you could help reduce world hunger and even help with climate change!
