Section D – Higher Only

Worked Example

Consider the following square based pyramid with height 𝑯𝑯 = 𝟏𝟏𝟏𝟏.

Calculate length 𝒙𝒙, giving your answer to 3 significant figures.

𝒙𝒙 cm

7 cm

Step 1: Calculate the diagonal length of the base using Pythagoras’ theorem.

𝑎𝑎2 + 𝑏𝑏 2 = 𝑐𝑐 2
𝑐𝑐 2 = 𝑎𝑎2 + 𝑏𝑏 2
𝑐𝑐 2 = 72 + 72
𝑐𝑐 2 = 98
𝑐𝑐 = √98 = 7√2

Step 2: Identify a triangle within the pyramid which will allow you to find the length 𝑥𝑥.

We are given the height so we will expect the

height to form one of the sides of the triangle.
The height meets the diagonal at its midpoint and x cm
at a right angle. Therefore, the base of the new 10 cm
triangle is half of the diagonal. The height pf the
pyramid forms the height of the new triangle, and
the length x forms the hypotenuse. 7√2
cm
2

Step 3: Use Pythagoras’ theorem to calculate 𝑥𝑥.

𝑐𝑐 2 = 𝑎𝑎2 + 𝑏𝑏 2
2
𝟕𝟕√𝟐𝟐
𝑥𝑥 2 = 102 +
𝟐𝟐
𝑥𝑥 2 = 100 + 24.5 = 124.5
𝑥𝑥 = √124.5 = 11.157 … = 11.2 cm

The length of 𝑥𝑥 is 11.2 𝑐𝑐𝑐𝑐.
