People are living in the context of rapid technological development, which makes activities

used to be in real life, now can be conducted through digital space. By that mean,
telecommuting, which is a working method that does not require people to physically be in
the workplace, has been innovated and on the rise. This trend has transformed traditional
work environments, and while it brings about several disadvantages, in my opinion, its
benefits surpass the drawbacks.
On the one hand, remote working offers some remarkable advantages. One of those is the
flexibility it provides to the employees. Employees are not restricted by fixed work schedules.
Moreover, working from home can not only eliminate the commuting time, but also save
people’s money from fuel costs. Thus, remote workers can reduce stress from trivial things
like: being late for work or increasing petrol price, as well as devote more time to their
families or hobbies, promoting a better work-life balance. Another upside of telecommuting is
its positive impact on the environment. Fewer employees commuting every morning means
less carbon emissions and less chance for traffic congestion to occur. Researches indicated
that during COVID 19 pandemic when most people had to work from home, air pollution
index in countries that used to be severely polluted had considerably decreased due to the
absence of vehicles.
On the other hand, telecommuting also has a notable downside. Being lack of face-to-face
communication and supervision, remote workers may feel isolated and work less efficiently.
Without direct communication, collaboration and innovation can be hindered. Thereby, this
can negatively affect their sense of belonging within the workplace. And due to an inability to
separate work from personal life or different distractions at home, which is not a suitable
place for concentrating, people may struggle with maintaining productivity.
In recapitulation, telecommuting presents apparent benefits, which outweigh its resolvable
limitations. Distance workers should know how to take advantage of the upsides and focus on
their work at a reasonable level to reduce the insignificant downside.
