5th Grade Exam Preparation
Can (Abilities)
In English, we use the CAN structure to make sentences when
we talk about our talents, skills, and activities we can do .
Can’t (Inabilities)
✦ I can't (cannot) play a musical instrument.
✦ You can't (cannot) dance.
✦ We can't (cannot) do origami.
✦ They can't (cannot) rollerblade.
EXAMPLES
✦ Can you do gymnastics?
Short answers
– Yes, I can .
– No, I can't .
Long answers
– Yes, I can do gymnastics.
– No, I can't do gymnastics.
Modals – ‘can’ and ‘can’t’
We can use can and can’t to talk about abilities in the present.
1. True or false?
Read and circle true or false for these sentences.
I know lots of sports. I can swim and I can play football. I can play
basketball too because we practise at school! But I can’t play
tennis. What else can I do? Well, I can’t speak German or French
but I can speak English and Arabic!

Telling The Time in English
The first way to tell the time in English is to say the hours and
minutes in order, as we see them on a digital clock screen.
It is two fifteen.
Other expressions we can use to tell the time are:
1. O'clock is used only at full hours.
