Can / Can’t

Can (Abilities)
In English, we use the CAN structure to make sentences when
we talk about our talents, skills, and activities we can do .

✦ I can speak English.


✦ You can play the piano.
✦ We can play soccer.
✦ They can do experiments.

✦ He can solve problems.


✦ She can draw pictures.
✦ It can swim.

Can’t (Inabilities)
✦ I can't (cannot) play a musical instrument.
✦ You can't (cannot) dance.
✦ We can't (cannot) do origami.
✦ They can't (cannot) rollerblade.

✦ He can't (cannot) play checkers. (He can't play checkers.)


✦ She can't (cannot) read. (He can't read.)
✦ It can't (cannot) run. (He can't run.)
Question Sentences with Can
When asking a question to find out whether the other person can
do an activity, CAN is placed at the beginning of the sentence.

EXAMPLES
✦ Can you do gymnastics?
Short answers
– Yes, I can .
– No, I can't .

Long answers
– Yes, I can do gymnastics.
– No, I can't do gymnastics.
Modals – ‘can’ and ‘can’t’
We can use can and can’t to talk about abilities in the present.

1. True or false?
Read and circle true or false for these sentences.

I know lots of sports. I can swim and I can play football. I can play
basketball too because we practise at school! But I can’t play
tennis. What else can I do? Well, I can’t speak German or French
but I can speak English and Arabic!

Telling The Time in English
The first way to tell the time in English is to say the hours and
minutes in order, as we see them on a digital clock screen.

It is thirty eight. (It's eight thirty)

It is two fifteen.
Other expressions we can use to tell the time are:
1. O'clock is used only at full hours.

2. When it is half past time, the expression half past is used.

3. We use quarter past to express that it is quarter past time.

4. We use quarter to to express that it is a quarter to o'clock.

5. When we say the elapsed minute, we use PAST , and when


we say the remaining minute , we use TO . We need to pay
attention to the fact that in English, when we say the hours, the
elapsed or remaining minute is said first, followed by the hour.
We need to use PAST (past) for the time period up to half past,
and TO (near) after half past.
