Discussion
Summertime for the Young
By: Vickie L. Magbag
If there is something students always look
forward to with a twinkle in their eyes and a pulsating
beat in their hearts, it is none other than
summertime! For the young ones, it is a great time
for family bonding. Everyone is busy packing bags
and stacking food in the basket for a delightful picnic
or a brief vacation somewhere in the suburbs or the
provinces. The rich and famous settle for trips abroad
for a taste of cold, snowy mornings and new
experience.

To the other youngsters, it is the time to hold

“gimmiks” with close friends. They stroll around the

neighborhood under the moonlight, munching junk

food, planning to go “malling”, ghost-hunting, or
swapping stories of the heart. Squeals of laughter can
be heard when they play “patintero” or “tumbang
preso” on the streets. Basketball and volleyball
tournaments held involve not only the youth, but the
adults as well. Who shout and scream the loudest

given special treats. The cerebral ones choose to be
enrolled in academic classes, while the sports buffs
are in basketball, football, volleyball, or swimming
clinics. The brave and the daring engage in hiking,
spelunking, diving, air gliding, ziplining, and bungee-
jumping. Lucky youngsters whose giftedness in the
arts is discovered early by their parents attend ballet
classes, dab brushes on canvasses, twist bones and
muscles in street dance sessions, and run their
fingers through piano keys and guitar strings Many
youngers develop an early interest in cooking. They
hound their mothers in the kitchen trying to learn
how to bake, chop vegetables without losing a finger,
sauté, steam, and fry. They enroll in culinary classes
where they unbelievably produce dishes that can
compete with those served in five-star hotels. You
