Separation Exam Final 2024-Copy

The document outlines an advanced separation process exam for Hodeidah University's Chemical Engineering department for the academic year 2024-2025. It includes multiple questions on topics such as gas absorption, leaching, and liquid-liquid extraction, requiring students to answer true/false questions, perform calculations, and compare different separation techniques. Additionally, it addresses the factors influencing extraction rates and the theoretical stages needed for specific separations.

Answer for All the following questions:

Question one

A. Answer by (T) or (F) and correct the wrong answer:

1.When water is used as the absorbent it is prefer to separate the absorbent from solute by Distillation. ( )
2.The solubility of a gas in liquid decrease as the temperature increase for stripping. ( )
3.In leaching process the liquid chosen should be a good selectively solvent and its viscosity should
be high to circulate freely. ( )
4. The separation agent for leaching is MSA. ( )
5. There are four techniques to separate the feed mixture into stream of differing chemical composition. ( ) 10

B. A slurry of a flaked soybeans weighing a total of 100kg contains 77kg of inert solid and 23kg of solution with
10% wt oil and 90% wt solvent hexane. This slurry is contacted with 100kg of pure hexane in a single stage so that 15
the value of N for the outlet underflow is 1.5kg insoluble solid / kg solution retained. Calculate the amounts and
the compositions of the overflow V1 and the underflow L1 leaving the stage.

C. 1. What is the different between the equilibrium phase and operating phase in distillation , support your
Answer with drawing?
2. Setup a table and compare between leaching and liquid - liquid extraction in definition , separation agent, 12
separation principle and the developed or added phase?

Question tow

1. For the gas absorption the separation agent is ….
a. Vapor stripping.
b. Liquid absorbate.
c. Solid adsorbent.
d. All the answer above are wrong.

2. The absorber are best operated at….. and … 6

a. High temperature, high pressure

B. Answer the following question shortly?
1. What are the factors influencing the rate of extraction in leaching process?
2. Write the type of equipment for liquid – liquid extraction? 12
3. What are the factors influencing the extraction in liquid – liquid extraction?

C. Its desired to absorb 90% of the acetone in a gas containing 1mol % acetone in air in a counter
current stage tower. The total inlet gas flow to the tower is 30 kgmol /h and the total inlet pure
water flow to be used to absorb the acetone is 90kg mol H2O /h.
If the process is operated isothermally at 300K and a total pressure of 101.3KPa and the 15
equilibrium relation for acetone (A) in the gas liquid is yA=2.53xA Determine the number of
theoretical stages required for this separation?
