4. How can we find the point of contact of tangent when a line touches an ellipse or a hyperbola?

Let the point of contact be  x1 , y1  . Write dwon equation of tangent at  x1 , y1  using T = 0, compare
it with given equation of tangent.
5. Equation of pair of tangents drawn from the point (x1, y1 ) to the ellipse S = 0 (or hyperbola
S = 0.

Method -1: SS1  T

Method -2: Let equation of tangent be y  mx  a 2 m 2  b 2 for ellipse,

 it passes through  x1 , y1   y1  mx1  a 2 m 2  b 2 . Solve it get the value of m.

So similar process for the hyperbola.

7. Equation of chord of contact of tangents drawn from the point (x1, y1 ) to the ellipse S = 0 or hyperbola
S = 0 is T = 0
8. Equation of chord to the ellipse S = 0 or hyperbola S = 0 whose mid point is (x1, y1 ) is T = S1
