A 14-year old boy whose favourite pastime was hacking into the confidential computer records of banks and
government organisations was finally caught by the police last week. However, rather than receive a prison
sentence or fine, the child-criminal has now been offered a job with a software developer specialising in anti-
virus programs. The company that made the offer said the boy was very efficient, but one government
minister commented that this kind of offer set a bad example for other youngsters thinking of breaking into
systems. The software company defended its decision saying that the boy has shown real initiative.

Do you often think that your town may benefit from more green spaces? If your answer is ‘yes’, then you
might be surprised to hear about the local council in the English town of Blakenthorpe, which is currently
trying to arrest people for ‘planting flowers’. It all began when flowers and plants started appearing at road
sides and areas around the city. The town council has accused ‘Green Vandals’ of doing some ‘midnight
gardening’. One person said, ‘These so-called law-breakers are just doing the job that our local council should
be doing. I wish them the best of luck’.
C
Many criminals are probably ready to deal with alarms or maybe one or two large dogs at the front door but a
thief in Osaka, Japan, had a surprise when he broke into a house where 15 sumo wrestlers were staying the
night. Shiro Morioka, 42, was in the process of looking for something to steal when suddenly the lights went
on. He was horrified to find a group of massive athletes. The police came soon afterwards. He ran to them
and was really happy when they took him away to the safety of a police cell.
1 Is it a crime or not?
2 Take me to prison!
3 A ‘special’ teenager.
Task B Circle T for true and F for false. Correct the false statement/s on the blank line/s below.
