METHOD STATEMENT FOR CARPENTRY

1. Scope of Work

The scope of work includes the selection of plywood, joinery techniques, plywood jointing, and the
finishing of exposed wooden or veneer surfaces. The work involves ensuring strength, stability, and
durability in all joinery elements while achieving an aesthetically pleasing finish.

2. Materials and Tools

Materials:

 BWP Grade Plywood (Boiling Water Proof): Used for the construction of the joinery items.
 Water-Based Polyurethane Coating: Used for finishing the exposed wooden or veneer surfaces.
 G.I Plywood Jointing Clips: Used for joining plywood sheets for enhanced stability.
 Wood Glue: For bonding joints where required.
 Wood Screws: For securing plywood panels and joints.
 Edge Banding (if applicable): For finishing edges of the plywood panels.

Tools:

 Measuring Tape for accurate measurements.

 Spirit Level for ensuring level surfaces.
 Circular Saw or Table Saw for cutting plywood to required dimensions.
 Woodworking Clamps for holding pieces during assembly.
 Drill with wood bits for screw insertion.
 Screwdriver for driving screws.
 Sandpaper or Sanding Machine for smoothing surfaces.
 Brushes or Rollers for applying the polyurethane coating.
 Safety Gear: Gloves, goggles, ear protection.

3. Pre-Installation Requirements

Site and Material Preparation:

MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

GC

WMS/EIPL/Cisco
1. Ensure Plywood Quality:
o Verify that all plywood used is BWP grade (Boiling Water Proof) to ensure that it is
moisture-resistant and suitable for the intended application. Ensure the plywood is free
from defects such as warping, splits, or knots.
2. Substrate Surface:
o Ensure that the surfaces where the plywood will be installed (such as wooden frames or
walls) are clean, dry, and smooth. All substrates should be free of dust, grease, or other
contaminants.
3. Tools and Equipment Check:
o Ensure all tools (saws, drills, screwdrivers, etc.) are in good working condition. Check that all
measuring tools, levels, and marking tools are accurate for precise cutting and alignment.
4. Health and Safety Precautions:
o All workers should wear appropriate PPE (Personal Protective Equipment), including
gloves, goggles, and ear protection when operating machinery or handling materials.

4. Installation Procedure

Step 1: Cutting and Preparing the Plywood Panels

1. Measuring and Marking:

o Accurately measure and mark the plywood sheets based on the required dimensions for the
joinery work.
o Use a spirit level and measuring tape to ensure precise alignment and angles.
2. Cutting the Plywood:
o Using a circular saw or table saw, cut the plywood to the required dimensions. Ensure the
edges are smooth and straight. If necessary, use a sanding machine or sandpaper to
remove any rough edges.
3. Edge Banding (if applicable):
o If the plywood edges are exposed and require finishing, apply edge banding to give them a
clean, professional look. Secure the banding with an adhesive and trim any excess material.

Step 2: Joining the Plywood Panels

1. Jointing Method:
o For joining plywood panels, use proper plywood jointing techniques to ensure strength and
stability. The joint type will depend on the application, but common techniques include butt
joints, mitre joints, or dovetail joints.
2. Use of G.I Plywood Jointing Clips:
o To ensure strong and stable joints, use G.I plywood jointing clips. These clips will provide
additional support and alignment for the joints, especially in large panels.
o Position the clips at regular intervals along the edge of the plywood sheets and secure them
using screws or nails as required. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for correct
installation.
3. Glue and Screw Fixing:
o For additional strength, apply wood glue to the joint surfaces before joining the plywood
sheets. Use clamps to hold the plywood in place until the glue sets.

o After the glue has dried, drive wood screws through the joint to ensure the plywood sheets
are securely fastened together.
o Ensure that the screws are countersunk below the surface of the plywood to avoid damage
during finishing.
4. Check for Alignment and Levelness:
o Use a spirit level to ensure that the panels are aligned and level during assembly. Adjust as
necessary before securing them fully.

Step 3: Finishing the Exposed Wooden/Veneer Surfaces

1. Surface Preparation:
o Before applying the water-based polyurethane coating, the exposed plywood or veneer
surfaces should be smooth and clean. Sand the surface to remove any imperfections or
rough areas.
o If needed, apply a sealer coat to the plywood before applying the polyurethane. This will
help in even absorption of the finish.
2. Applying the Polyurethane Coating:
o Use a brush or roller to apply a thin, even coat of water-based polyurethane on the
exposed surfaces of the plywood.
o Apply the polyurethane in the direction of the grain for a smooth finish.
o Allow the first coat to dry according to the manufacturer’s instructions (typically 4-6 hours).
Sand the surface lightly with fine-grit sandpaper between coats to ensure smoothness and
adhesion of subsequent layers.
3. Second Coat Application:
o After the first coat has dried and been lightly sanded, apply a second coat of polyurethane
to achieve a durable, glossy finish.
o Allow the second coat to cure completely (typically 24-48 hours), ensuring that the surface
is hardened and ready for use.

Step 4: Final Inspection and Cleaning

1. Inspect the Joints and Finish:

o Inspect all plywood joints to ensure they are properly aligned, stable, and free from
defects. Check for any gaps or misalignments and correct as needed.
o Inspect the polyurethane finish for smoothness, even coverage, and proper adhesion.
2. Cleaning:
o Clean any tools and excess material from the installation area. Wipe down surfaces to
remove dust and debris after sanding and finishing.
3. Protect the Finished Surface:
o Ensure the finished surface is protected from scratches, dirt, and damage during
subsequent activities on the site. Use protective covers or plywood sheets to shield the
work area if necessary.

5. Post-Installation Maintenance

1. Routine Inspection:
QUALITY
MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

GC

WMS/EIPL/Cisco
o Inspect the joinery work periodically for any signs of damage or wear. Ensure that the joints
remain secure and that the finished surface remains in good condition.
2. Cleaning:
o Clean the finished wooden surfaces regularly with a soft cloth to avoid abrasive materials
that could damage the finish. Use a mild cleaner suitable for wood surfaces if needed.

6. Conclusion

The joinery work has been completed in accordance with the specified requirements, ensuring that BWP
grade plywood has been used, proper jointing techniques have been followed, and all exposed surfaces
have been finished with water-based polyurethane for durability and aesthetic appeal. The joints are stable
and secure, and the finish is smooth and ready for use. Regular inspections and maintenance will help
preserve the quality of the joinery over time.
