FLUID MECHANICS LABORATORY EXPERIMENT 1

The document outlines an experiment conducted by students at De La Salle University to determine the specific gravity of fluids using an open tube manometer. The experiment involved measuring the heights of water and oil in the manometer, calculating specific gravity, and analyzing the results. Recommendations for improving accuracy include proper leveling of the manometer and conducting multiple trials.

EXPERIMENT 1

SPECIFIC GRAVITY OF FLUIDS USING OPEN TUBE MANOMETER

OBJECTIVE:

To understand and know through experiment one of the fundamental

properties of fluid which is the specific gravity. To be proficient in the use
of laboratory equipment in order to determine the relationship between
bulk properties of fluids

THEORY:

Different fluids have different specific gravity and the water is the basis of
determining the specific gravity of fluids.

PICTURES/ SET-UP:

MATERIALS & APPARATUS:

1. U-tube Manometer 1 pc

2. Cooking Oil 1 mL
3. Engine Oil 1 mL
4. Water 1 mL
5. Ruler 1 pc
6. Funnel 1 pc

PROCEDURE

1. Prepare the needed materials and set up the apparatus so that the
two legs are levelled.
2. Level the manometer first. Fill the U-Tube manometer with water in
one leg then measure the height above the water.
3. Pour the oil then measure the final heights above the water and oil
inside the U-Tube manometer.
4. Determine the specific gravity of oil using the formula below.

Hwater = Ho – Hf water
Hoil = Ho – Hf oil
S.G. = Hwater/ Hoil

Where: Ho = Initial height of Fluid

Hf water = Final height of water
Hf oil = Final height of oil
H water = Height of water
H oil = Height of oil

5. Repeat the process for three (3) trials and compare the results.

DATA AND TABULATION:

I. For Cooking Oil

TRIAL Ho (cm) Hf oil (cm) Hf water (cm) Sp.Gr ( oil)

1 0.41 m 0.385 m 0.389 m 0.84
2 0.265 m 0.22 m 0.225 m 0.89
3 0.34 m 0.28 m 0.287 m 0.9

II. For Motor Oil

TRIAL Ho (cm) Hf oil (cm) Hf water (cm) Sp.Gr ( oil)

1 0.405 m 0.40 m 0.401 m 0.80
2 0.38 m 0.361 m 0.365 m 0.80
3 0.215 m 0.204 m 0.206 m 0.82

OBSERVATIONS/ CONCLUSION:
Upon further analysis of the given data, the specific gravity of each liquid varies due to other factors
such as the viscosity and other intensive properties like density and its elevation in respect to other liquids inside
the manometer. Likewise, the specific gravity of oil, regardless of its type, is always consistently within the
values of 0.8 to 0.9. This also does mean in practice that oil will always float above the water since the oil’s
value of specific gravity is less than the water’s specific gravity of 1.

RECOMMENDATIONS:
To improve the accuracy of our data in this experiment, we should consider several factors. First, our U-tube
manometer must be properly level to prevent measurement errors. Additionally, we must conduct multiple
trials to help identify the inconsistencies and improve the reliability of results. Also, to minimize the
experimental errors, the oil should be poured slowly into the U-tube manometer to prevent the formation of
bubbles that can cause imprecise experiments. By following these recommendations, the experiment will produce
more accurate and reliable results, resulting for better experiment.
