CHAPTER 1

Background of the study

Academic performance is a cornerstone of education success, and

understanding of the factors that influence it has always been a critical

focus for educators and researchers. Among these factors, study habits

play a pivotal role in shaping how students learn and retain knowledge. In

junior high school, where students encounter more complex subjects like

science, the connection between effective study habits and academic

performance becomes particularly significant.

This study aims to explore how study habits, such as time

management, note-taking, and reviewing techniques, affects student's

performance in science. By examining these habits, we can uncover

patterns and practices that promote better understanding and retention,

ultimately leading to improved academic outcomes. This exploration

provides valuable insights for students, educators, and parents seeking to

enhance learning strategies and support academic growth in the critical

subject of science.

Study habits refer to the consistent practices and techniques that

students use to acquire, process, and retain knowledge. These habits

include time management, organization, note taking, active reading, and

reviewing. The way students approach their studies significantly impacts

how well they comprehend and apply scientific concepts. Positive study

habits can boost performance and confidence, while poor habits may

hinder understanding and academic success.

Furthermore, the findings of this study will provide valuable insights

for educators, parents, and students themselves. Educators can use these

insights to design more effective teaching strategies and interventions,

while parents and students themselves can adopt better holds to improve

academic results.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This study investigates the relationship between study habits and

academic performance in junior high school science students, addressing

two key research questions: first, how different study habits affect student

achievement in science; and second, what constitutes the most effective

study practices for this population. The research will identify optimal

learning strategies, uncover barriers to their adoption, and ultimately

provide evidence-based recommendations for improving learning

strategies to enhance student performance in science education.

Specifically. It aims to address the following;

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

Significance of the Study This research is important for various groups

within the education system, as it aims to understand how students' study

habits impact their academic performance in Junior High School Science.

Here's why it's meaningful for everyone involved:

Environment: This study can help improve the overall learning

environment at school. By examining how study habits connect to

performance, we can better understand what makes a school environment

supportive of students’ success. It can inspire changes like better

classroom setups or more resources, creating a place where students can

thrive academically.

Community: The findings could have a positive impact beyond the

classroom. If the research shows that certain study habits lead to better

performance, it might encourage parents and the community to get

involved in supporting students' learning. Communities could come

together to provide extra help, create tutoring programs, or offer

opportunities for students to learn outside of school.

Teachers: Teacher will gain insights into how students' study habits

affect their performance in science. Knowing what works best for students

can help teachers adjust their teaching methods, make lessons more

engaging, and provide tailored advice to help students improve. In the

end, teachers can better support their students and foster an environment

where learning is more effective.

Students: For students, this research can be eye-opening. It can help

them understand the importance of developing good study habits and

how those habits directly affect their success in science. By learning which

study strategies work best for them, students can boost their academic

performance and feel more confident in their abilities. This research

encourages students to take control of their learning and develop habits

that will serve them well, not only in science but in other subjects too.

Future researchers: Can build upon the findings of this study. It

opens up new paths for exploring how study habits affect other subjects

or age groups, and it encourages more detailed research into which

specific habits lead to the best outcomes. This research helps lay the

groundwork for future studies in educational psychology and academic

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Study habits are the strategies and routines that students use to manage

their learning. These habits play a big role in how well students perform

academically, especially in subjects like science that require a deeper

understanding of complex ideas. Many studies have shown that students

who develop effective study habits tend to do better in school.

In the study of (Tinto 2017), it was found that students who have

organized routines like setting aside time each day for studying and

reviewing regularly tend to score higher academically. This is especially

important for science, which requires critical thinking and problem-solving

skills.

In science, active learning habits are especially helpful. According to a

study by (Khera 2019), students who take notes, test themselves, and

summarize what they've learned do better in science compared to those

who simply reread their notes. This active approach helps them

understand and remember the material better. For junior high school

students, who are still building their study routines, developing these

habits can help them perform better in their science classes. Time

management is another crucial study

habit. When students can manage their time well, they can dedicate more

focused time to studying, which leads to better performance. According to

x

a study of (Garcia and Dizon 2019) found that students who plan out their

study time and stick to a schedule tend to do better in science because

they can avoid cramming and instead focus on understanding the material

in-depth.

Proper time management also helps reduce stress, making it easier for

students to stay calm and think clearly during exams and assignments.

The study environment is another key factor. Having a quiet, distraction-

free place to study allows students to concentrate better. In the study of

(Ramos 2022), it was found that students who study in calm spaces,

without interruptions like social media or noise, are more likely to perform

well in subjects like science.

A good study environment can make it easier to focus and retain

information. Furthermore, according to the research by Smith and

(Johnson 2021), students who have access to organized and well-lit study

spaces tend to engage more deeply with their work, leading to greater

retention and better performance.

A conducive study environment such as one with minimal distractions and

optimal lighting has been shown to improve cognitive function and

information processing (Chung & Kim, 2020). The importance of a good

study

environment is echoed by (Davis 2018), who suggested that quiet spaces

reduce cognitive overload, allowing students to concentrate better on

difficult tasks, such as those required in science subjects. Family support

is also a major factor in helping students develop good study habits.

According to the study of (Velasco 2019), students who receive

encouragement and help from their families are more likely to stick to a

study routine and perform better academically. Parents who set aside

time for study sessions and check on their child's progress can make a big

difference in how well students do in school, especially in challenging

subjects like science.

In line with this, a study by (Lee 2020) emphasized that positive parental

involvement, such as providing emotional support and academic

guidance, can foster a greater sense of self-discipline and responsibility in

students. In addition, research by (Park and Lee 2021) found that students

with strong family support networks showed more resilience and higher

academic success, particularly in subjects like math and science.

Moreover, family encouragement helps reduce academic anxiety and

boosts students’ motivation to succeed (Zhang & Li, 2022). Good study

habits are key to performing well in science, particularly for junior high

school students.

Students who manage their time, engage in active learning, and have a

supportive environment are more likely to succeed. Family involvement, a

quiet study space, and thoughtful use of technology can also make a big

difference. This suggests that by improving study habits, students could

see a significant boost in their academic performance, especially in

science. The combination of effective time management, active learning,

and a structured study environment has been shown to help students

excel academically (Johnson & Carter, 2021).

Similarly, family support plays a crucial role in reinforcing the

development of these habits, ensuring that students have both the

emotional and practical support they need (Wang & Zhang, 2022). A

synthesis of these studies highlights the interconnectedness of study

habits, family support, and the study environment, all of which contribute

to students' success in science. The findings from the reviewed literature

emphasize that students who adopt structured study habits and receive

family support are more likely to succeed in challenging subjects like

science.

science. - Students will be able to identify common misconceptions about

effective study habits.

Classroom teaching: Clear class objectives, a variety of teaching

techniques, including group projects, lectures, and technology integration,

as well as ongoing evaluation to monitor student progress, are all

components of effective teaching. By adjusting to the requirements of

their pupils, fostering an inclusive environment, and making teachings

relevant using real-world examples, teachers play a critical role in

encouraging learning.

Pedagogical Skills: Significantly influence student learning in science.

These include engaging lesson design, classroom management, and the

use of technology, inquiry-based learning, and hands-on experiments.

However, this study focuses on how students' own study habits, rather

than teaching methods, impact their science performance.
