BECED 2B Child Development
Overview concept of Child Development
The concept of child development is a broad field that explores how children grow and
change from infancy through adolescence. It involves physical, cognitive, emotional, and social
development.
1. Physical Development- changes in in body size, motor skills, and health. Like Gross-
motor skills involve the mastery of large muscle movements, as well as the building of
strength in muscle groups like the arms, legs, and core. Examples of such skills for
infants and toddlers include reaching, rolling, crawling, walking, and climbing. Fine-motor
skills involve smaller, more precise movements, particularly movements of the hands
and fingers, such as grasping, pointing, and clapping.

2. Cognitive Development- growth in thinking, learning, problem-solving, and language

skills. Cognitive development means the development of the ability to think and reason.
Children ages 6 to 12, usually think in concrete ways (concrete operations). This can
include things like how to combine, separate, order, and transform objects and actions.

3. Emotional Development- understanding and managing emotions, self-esteem, and

forming relationships. Emotional development is a complex task that begins in infancy
and continues into adulthood. The first emotions that can be recognized in babies
include joy, anger, sadness and fear. As children’s sense of self develops, more complex
emotions like shyness, surprise, elation, embarrassment, shame, guilt, pride and
empathy emerge.

4. Social Development- learning to interact with others, understanding social norms, and
building relationships. Social development in early childhood (Preschool) refers to
the gradual process by which a child learns to interact with others, form relationships,
and develop a sense of self in relation to others. During this stage, children learn
important skills such as communication, empathy, cooperation, and conflict resolution.
These skills help children understand their own emotions and those of others, build
meaningful relationships, and navigate the social world around them.
