Case Study 1
Mark Gil P. Sendin
MSIT-A

1. Compare the business models and areas of strength of Apple, Google, and Microsoft.

Apple, Google, and Microsoft are three big corporations that are competing for control of
the Internet user's experience while having distinct business models and strategies. They bring
their unique talents to the platform. Microsoft's business model revolves around operating systems,
which are used by 95 percent of all machines on the planet. Microsoft's benefits are that it is still
the industry leader in PC operating systems and desktop productivity applications. However, in
terms of smartphone hardware and software, mobile computing, cloud-based software
Applications, and its INTERNET portal, it has failed miserably. he iPhone is the highest-grossing
cellphone ever, with Apple controlling 27 percent of the mobile market. Google's business model
focuses on the smartphone, advertisement, and operating systems segments of the industry.
Google's advantages include their dominance of ads through their search engine. And their
Android operating system commands 41% of the smartphone market. This smartphone market is
rising at a pace three times faster than that of the iPhone.

2. Why is mobile computing so important to these three firms? Evaluate the mobile platform
offerings of each firm.

Because of the fundamental paradigm shift, mobile computing is extremely critical to these
businesses. The setting is a $400 billion e-commerce marketplace, and the technologies are used
to enhance the mobile device experience. Both Google and Apple's most popular and crucial
market area is mobile computing. In terms of mobile dominance, Apple has achieved several
advantages. People nowadays want to use their phones in the most innovative ways possible,
including using speech recognition. Most new phones enable us to access the internet, read email,
listen to music, and other functions. The inventions are the ability to talk to our phones and use
them as personal assistants. The three rivals are battling it out to provide us with the best model
and platform.

3. What is the significance of mobile applications, app stores, and closed vs. open app
standards to the success or failure of mobile computing?

The app stores and mobile apps are critical to the success of mobile computing. That is, in
just four years, mobile app stores have almost doubled their revenue. Apple is the industry leader
in this field. The new ecosystem-driven mobile applications provide opportunities for carriers to
create their app stores based on user information and data use patterns. Apps significantly improve
the experience of using a mobile computer, and without them, the future of mobile Internet
forecasts will be much less rosy. The business that comes up with the most attractive range of
devices and software would have a major competitive advantage over rivals. An app sold via
Apple's App Store generates revenue for the company. For the corporation, this is worth billions
of dollars. Apple has a benefit even though an app is free because consumers must visit Apple's
App Store. App developers, on the other hand, have complained that raising money is too difficult.
Some applications have been excluded from Apple's mobile devices. Apple alleged that it had
infringed on users' privacy. Google has made a concerted effort to increase the number of
applications available for Droid-based mobile devices by encouraging developers to do so. Google
also makes money by including advertisements in some of the applications that are downloaded
on Droid devices.

4. Which company and business model do you think will prevail in this epic struggle? Explain
your answer.

Google currently owns the majority of the advertisement market; however, Microsoft and
Apple will pose a serious challenge. Microsoft Corporation and Apple will stop at nothing to
reverse and kill its competitive advantage as long as money is at stake. For several years, Apple
has had a big lead in mobile computing. However, as more companies enter the market, such as
Google, Microsoft, and others, its dominance will be challenged. Google's search engine continues
to dominate web-based services. But, as Steve Jobs said, those who dream and continue to build
new technologies will rise to the top.

5. What difference would it make to a business or to an individual consumer if Apple, Google,

or Microsoft dominated the Internet experience? Explain your answer.

Preferably than Google, Apple is the pioneer of in-app growth. Google, on the other hand,
is catching up with its Android operating system and encouraging app developers. If a customer
demands a useful or decent app, and the right platform is chosen, the app will be successful for the
next few years. Switching costs count into both cases, not only for phone transactions but also for
app purchases. It is difficult and costly to migrate to a new platform once a user has purchased and
become used to using one.
