Tutorial: Extended Surface (Fins)

Question 1
Consider two long, slender rods of the same diameter but different materials. One end
of each rod is attached to a base surface maintained at 1000C, while the surfaces of the
rods are exposed to ambient air at 200C. By traversing the length of the each rod with a
thermocouple, it was observed that the temperatures of the rods were equal at the
positions xA =0.15m and xB= 0.075m, where x is measured from the base surface. if the
thermal conductivity of the rod A is known to be kA=70W/m.K, determine the value of
kB for rod B.

Question-2
Due to blockage of fluid flow, the convection heat transfer coefficient for the finned
and prime surfaces of a fin array in general decreases as the number of fins increases.
Consider the fin array shown in Figure, with wall height of 20 mm, w = 20 mm, t =2
mm, and L = 20 mm. The fins are aluminum and the base and environment
temperatures are Tb = 95°C and T∞ = 20°C. As a first approximation, assume

h = hmax × (1 − N/Nmax) where Nmax is the maximum number of fins that can be placed
on a surface, so that Nmax = 20 mm/2 mm = 10. For hmax = 50 W/m2 ⋅ K, determine the
total heat rate for N = 0, 3, 6, and 9 fins.

Evaluative Problems
1. An experimental arrangement for measuring the thermal conductivity of solid
materials involves the use of two long rods that are equivalent in every respect, except
that one is fabricated from a standard material of known thermal conductivity kA while
the other is fabricated from the material whose thermal conductivity kB is desired.
Both rods are attached at one end to a heat source of fixed temperature Tb, are exposed
to a fluid of temperature T∞, and are instrumented with thermocouples to measure the
temperature at a fixed distance x1 from the heat source. If the standard material is
aluminum, with kA = 200 W/m ⋅ K, and measurements reveal values of TA = 75°C and
TB = 60°C at x1 for Tb = 100°C and T∞ = 25°C, what is the thermal conductivity kB of
the test material ?

2. The engine cylinder of the motorcycle is constructed of 2024-T6 aluminium alloy

and is of height H = 0.15m and outside diameter D = 50mm. under typical operating
conditions the outer surface of the cylinder is at a temperature of 500K and is exposed
to ambient air at 300K, with a convection coefficient of 50W/m2.K. Annular fins are
integrally cast with the cylinder to increase the heat transfer to the surroundings.
Consider five such fins, which are of thickness t = 6mm, length L = 20mm, and
equally spaced, What is the increase in heat transfer due to use of the fins?
For 2024-T6 aluminium, T= 400K and k = 186W/mK.
