05 Toyota - Thermostat

The document describes the monitoring and diagnostic procedures for a thermostat within an engine control module (ECM). It outlines how the ECM estimates and compares engine coolant temperature (ECT) to identify faults, specifically focusing on the conditions that trigger a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) for thermostat malfunctions. Additionally, it details the enabling conditions and thresholds for detecting issues related to ECT and the thermostat's performance.

MONITOR DESCRIPTION
The engine control module (ECM) estimates the engine coolant temperature (ECT) based on starting tem-
perature, engine loads, and engine speeds. The ECM then compares the estimated ECT with the actual
ECT. When the estimated ECT reaches 75 _C (167 _F), the ECM checks the actual ECT. If the actual ECT
is less than 75 _C (167 _F), the ECM will interpret this as a fault of the thermostat or the engine cooling system
and set a DTC.
