Assignment-1

Set-1
Submission Deadline: 16.02.2025
1. Consider a RTD behaving as a first-order dynamic system with time constant τ = 2.00 s. At t = 0,
the sensor is plunged from a tank of ice water at T = 0oC into a tank of boiling liquid at T = 150oC.
(a) Calculate how much time will it take to read 60 oC.
(b) Assume the above RTD has resistance temperature co-efficient α= 0.005 / 0 C and resistance
at 00 C as 100 Ω. If E=10 V and all other resistances are of fixed value 100 Ω, determine the
output voltage of the bridge circuit in Fig. 1 when the RTD is subjected to 60 oC .
(c) Now reconsider the wheatstone bridge configuration and re-calculate the bridge output voltage
assuming each lead wire resistance as 15 Ω at 60 oC for 2-wire RTD. Comment on the difference
of output for (b) and (c).
(d) Draw a suitable circuit to avoid the bridge nonlinearity for single resistive sensor.

2. The resistance values for a thermistor are given as 4 kΩ and 8 kΩ for a temperature of 25 0C and
−5 0C respectively. Find the material constant (β) of thermistor. Design a simple voltage divider
based signal conditioning circuit so that the power dissipation across the thermistor is less than
0.4 mW for 25 0C to reduce self-heating error.

3. For a specific measurement application, the signal amplitude is 10 mV with maximum frequency
components of 60 Hz. Design a suitable signal conditioning circuit for this, so that the gain is
achieved as 100 and ensure that the circuit does not allow frequency beyond 75 Hz. Use
Instrumentation amplifier and other associated circuits.

4. If the input-output relationship for a pressure sensor is given by Y = 2.5 + 10 P – 0.35 P2 – 0.005
P3, where P is input (in Pascal) and Y is output (in milli-Volt), determine its sensitivity at an
operating input of 20 Pascal.

5. Derive the gain expression for an inverting amplifier considering the op-amp with finite gain.

6. If a LPF with cut-off frequency 500 Hz is cascaded with a HPF with cut-off frequency 150 Hz,
what kind of filter the overall circuit will behave as? Also mention the bandwidth of that resulting
filter. Design the complete circuit in LT-spice and show the frequency response. You can choose
any values of circuit components as per your requirements.

7. Derive the transfer function for the following circuit and comment on the type of the circuit.
8. Derive the transfer function for the following circuit and comment on the type of the circuit.
