Problem 1 (8 points) Evaluate the following limits. Do not use l’Hopital’s rule. Use proper
notation and show all your work.
x2 3x
a) (4 points) lim
x!3 x2 x 6

Problem 2 (8 points) Find all the vertical and horizontal asymptotes of the following function:
8
<7 for x < 0
f (x) = 2x
: 2 for x > 0
x 1
Justify your answer by taking the appropriate limits.

3
Problem 3 (9 points)

a) (3 points) Write down the limit definition of the derivative of f (x) at x = c.

b) (6 points) Use the limit definition of the derivative to find the derivative of f (x) = x2 + 3x + 1
at x = 2. Use the correct notation and show all your work. You must use the limit definition
to receive credit for this problem. Do not use l’Hopital’s rule.

4
Problem 4 (9 points) Calculate the derivatives of the following functions. Do not simplify your
answers.

a) (3 points) f (x) = x3 arctan(4x)

e 3x
b) (3 points) f (x) =
ln x

c) (3 points) f (x) = sec3 x

5
Problem 5 (8 points) Find the equation of the tangent line to the curve x2 y 2 + y 3 = 5 at the
point (2, 1). Show all your work.

6
Problem 6 (9 points) Two people start walking away from the same point. The first person starts
walking at 1pm and goes north at 2 mi/h. The second person starts walking at 2pm and goes east
at 3 mi/h. At what rate is the distance between the two people increasing at 3pm? Show all your
work. Include a carefully labeled picture representing the situation.

Problem 8 (9 points) The graph of y = f 0 (x) on the interval [ 7, 6] is shown below.

x

Find the following. Briefly justify your answers by using the graph above. Hint: Notice that you
are given the graph of f 0 and not f .

a) (3 points) all intervals on which f is decreasing,

b) (3 points) all values of x where f has a local minimum,

c) (3 points) all intervals where f is concave up.

9
Problem 9 (8 points) Consider the following function:

f (x) = x4 6x3 + 12x2

On what intervals is f concave up and on what intervals is f concave down? Show all your work.

10
Problem 10 (9 points) You want to fence a rectangular garden with an area of 120 square feet
and then divide it in half with a fence parallel to one of the sides of the garden. The outside fence
costs 5 per foot, while the fence in the middle of your garden costs 2 per foot.

a) (3 points) Draw a carefully labeled picture representing the situation.

b) (6 points) What is the least amount of money that you must spend on the entire fence? Show
all your work. This includes using calculus to justify that your answer is the minimum.
