C. Lesson TRAPEZOID is a quadrilateral with
Proper exactly one pair of parallel sides. The
parallel sides of a trapezoid are called
BASES while the non-parallel sides
are called LEGS. An angle formed by
a base and a leg is called base
angle.

̅ 𝐁̅̅𝐂̅ and ̅𝐀̅̅𝐃̅ are the bases

since ̅B̅̅C̅ ∥ ̅A̅̅D̅

̅ 𝐀̅̅𝐁̅ and ̅𝐃̅̅𝐂̅ are the legs

∠B and ∠C are base angles with

respect to ̅B̅̅C̅

∠A and ∠D are base angles with

respect to ̅A̅̅D̅

A diagonal is a segment that joins two

nonadjacent
vertices of a trapezoid. Moreover, the
median or midsegment is the
segment that connects the midpoints
of the two legs of the trapezoid.

̅ 𝐁̅̅𝐃̅ and ̅𝐂̅̅𝐀̅ are diagonals

̅ 𝐌̅̅𝐒̅ is the median or midsegment

Midsegment Theorem of Trapezoid

The median/midsegment of a
trapezoid is parallel to each of the
bases and its length is half the sum of
the lengths of the two bases.

What formula of the median will be ̅̅̅̅ ∥ 𝐁𝐂̅̅̅̅ ∥ 𝐀𝐃̅̅̅̅

driven? Median = ½ (Base1 + Base2)
MS = ½ (BC+ AD)

Exercise: First Ten!

1) If AM=5 and SR=13, what is 1. Median = 12 (B1+B2)

HI? HI = ½ ( AM + SR )
HI = 1/2 ( 5 + 13 )
Can some show everyone how to HI = ½ ( 18 )
solve for HI? HI = 9

2) If AM=x+2, SR=10 and HI=8, 2. Median = 12 (B1+B2)

what is x? HI = ½ ( AM + SR )
8 = ½ ( (x+2) + 10 )
How about finding the value of x? 8 = ½ ( x+2 + 10 )
8 = ½ ( x+12 )
2(8) = (12 ( x+12 ))2
16 = (12 ( x+12 ))2
16 = x+12
16-12 = x
4=x
x=4

3) If AM=2y-5, SR=y+8 and

HI=15, what is y?

Lastly can someone show the class 3.Median = 12 (B1+B2)

how to find the value of y? HI = ½ ( AM + SR )
15 = ½ ((2y-5) + (y+8))
15 = ½ (2y-5 + y+8)
15 = ½ (3y+3)
2(15) = (12 ( 3y+3))2
30 = (12 ( 3y+3))2
30 = 3y+3
30-3 = 3y
27 = 3y
9=y
y=9

ISOSCELES TRAPEZOID – A
SPECIAL TRAPEZOID!
There is a special type of trapezoid in
which two pairs of its angles are
congruent – the isosceles trapezoid.
An isosceles trapezoid is a trapezoid
in which the legs are congruent and
the base angles are congruent.

𝐀𝐃̅̅̅̅ ≌ 𝐁𝐂̅̅̅̅
With respect to base AB̅̅̅̅, ∠A ≌ ∠B
With respect to base DC̅̅̅̅, ∠D ≌ ∠C

Theorems Related to Isosceles

Trapezoid
 The base angles of an
isosceles trapezoid are
congruent.

1. ∠AMH ≌ ∠THM
m∠AMH = m∠THM
1. If m∠M=75, what is m∠H?

75 = m∠THM
m∠THM = 75

2. If m∠A=100 and 2. ∠A ≌ ∠T
m∠T=(3x+10), what is x? m∠A = m∠T
100 = 3x+10
100-10 = 3x
90 = 3x
903 = 3x3
30 = x
x = 30

3. If m∠H=4x+55, m∠M=9x+15, 3. ∠THM ≌ ∠AMH

what is m∠H? m∠THM = m∠AMH
4x+55 = 9x+15
55-15 = 9x – 4x
40 = 5x
405 = 5x5
8=x
x=8

m∠THM = 4x+55
If x=8, then

m∠THM = 4(8)+55
m∠THM = 32+55
m∠THM = 87
 Opposite angles of an
isosceles trapezoid are
supplementary.

1. m∠M+m∠T=180
1) If m∠M=75, what is m∠T?
75+m∠T=180
m∠T=180-75
m∠T=105

2) If m∠A=100 and m∠H=(3x- 2. m∠A + m∠H = 180

100 + (3x-10) = 180
100 + 3x-10 = 180
10), what is x?

90 + 3x = 180
3x = 180 – 90
3x = 90
3x/3 = 90/3
x = 30

3) If m∠H=10x+15, m∠A=111-x , 3. m∠H + m∠A = 180

what is m∠A? (10x+15)+(111 – x) = 180
10x+15 + 111-x = 180
9x +126 = 180
9x = 180–126
9x = 54
9x9 = 549
x=6

If x=6, then
m∠A=111-x
m∠A=111-6
m∠A=105

 The diagonals of an isosceles

trapezoid are congruent.
1) If MT=10x+7 and HA=8x+15,
what is x?
1. MT = HA
10x+7 = 8x+15
10x-8x = 15-7
2x = 8
x=4
2) If HA=(6x+7)in and MT=(7x-
9)in, what is HA?
2.HA = MT
6x+7 = 7x-9
7+9 = 7x-6x
16 = x
x = 16

If x = 16, then
HA = 6x+7
HA = 6(16)+7
HA = 96 + 7
HA = 103 in

2(96) = (12 (8)(LY))2

192 = (8)(LY)
1928 = 8 (LY)8
24 = LY
LY = 24cm
