Chapter 1 Practice Test (No calculator unless specified)

Read all directions carefully. There are several components to each problem. Anything you do not finish in class is
homework. You should use a separate sheet of paper so you have to room to show your work appropriately.

1. Find the function that is the transformation of f ( x)  2( x  1)  3 translated horizontally 2 units left followed by a

vertical stretch by a factor of 5 and finally a horizontal shrink by a factor of . Show and highlight all renaming steps
2
and other required steps.

2. Solve the system of equations. Show your work clearly, so that it is easy to follow. Check your answer by plugging the
numbers back into all three original equations. Answer in set notation. Think about the three possible answer types for
this type of problem and describe how you will know if the answer is no solution or infinite solutions.

4 x  2 y  3z  12
2 x  3 y  5 z  7
6 x  y  4 z  3

3. Use the graph below to write the equation of the line in slope-intercept form and standard form. Then write a
sentence to describe the meaning of the slope with the context of the problem.

4. Graph the parent function g ( x ) (dashed) for each function below and then graph the given function f ( x) . Describe
the transformations in complete sentences. Don’t forget order of operations in your descriptions. Then, give the domain
and range of each function f ( x) in set notation.

a. f ( x)  ( x  2) 2  1 b. f ( x)   x  1  3

5. Maddy’s Yummy Diner has 32 employees. The employees enjoy work because they love to eat Maddy’s Yummy Pizza
and the diner offers a great employee discount (20% off!). Some of the employees are bus boys, some are waiters, and
some are managers. Bus boys make $13 an hour, waiters make $25 an hour and managers make $30 an hour. If all 32
employees were working at the same time, the diner would pay employees a total of $746 an hour. There are 6 more
waiters than bus boys and managers combined. How many of each type employee work at the diner? Be sure to give a
‘let step’ and clearly show your work.
6. The marketing department of Roman’s Flower Shop has a budget of $30,000 for advertising. A television ad costs
$1000, an internet radio ad costs $200, and a newspaper ad costs $500. Roman informed the department that he does
not believe that people read newspapers anymore, but he told them that they can split the advertising however they
want. The department wants to run 60 ads per month and have as many internet radio ads as television ads and
newspaper ads combined. How many of each type of ad will the department run if they spend their entire budget on 60
ads? Be sure to give a ‘let step’ and clearly show your work.

7. (You can use a calculator to do the arithmetic for this one.) At Lamppost Pizza, an order of 3 slices of pizza, 4
breadsticks, and 2 sodas costs $19.96. A second order of 5 slices of pizza, 2 breadsticks, and 3 sodas costs $27.73. If 4
breadsticks and a soda cost $3.21 more than a slice of pizza, what is the cost of each item? Be sure to give a ‘let step’
and clearly show your work.

8. 𝑓(𝑥) = 2√𝑥 − 5; reflection in the x-axis followed by a translation 8 right

9a. Write the equation of the line that is perpendicular to the line y  3 that passes through the point.

9b. Write the equation of the line that is parallel to x  3 and passes through the same (13, -24).

9c. Write the equation of the line that is perpendicular to the line 3 x  4  7 y and passes through (9, 16) in both slope
intercept form and standard form.

10. Given f(x), a piece wise function. Graph each of the transformations g(x)

11. Write the equation of the line parallel to 6𝑥 + 12𝑦 = 10 with same x-intercept as the circle 𝑥 2 + 𝑦 2 − 4𝑥 + 4𝑦 = 0

12. Write the equation of the line tangent to circle 𝑥 2 + 𝑦 2 = 25 at (-4,-3).

13. Find the slope of the line passing through the following points: (3, 9) and (3  h,(3  h)2 ).

14. For the following questions find a) the constant of variation, b) an equation representing the relationship and c) the
missing quantity.

A. The number of busses and the number of passengers varies directly. If 12 busses are needed to transport 564
students, how many busses are needed to transport 72 students?
B. The number of pizzas and the total cost of the pizzas varies directly. If 6 pizzas cost $47.94, how much will 13
pizzas cost?
