Sunday My Way Bag

The Sunday Bag was designed to be like a lazy Sunday afternoon- A Blank Canvas. The design was
created to be simple; a beginner sew, but an open canvas for those that like to add their own
creativity. This little Everything Bag features a slip pocket on the front, a wide mouth opening, and
cute carry straps. Perfect as it is or make Sunday “My Way”. Add some piping, zipper pockets, use the
End Tabs to add a longer carry strap, omit the fleece and make a soft-sided bag. Play with
contrasting fabrics or mix some textiles, quilt it, embellish it… the possibilities are endless!

Finished size measures: 12” wide, 6” tall, and 4 ½” deep.

Make sure print seng is set at “Do Not Scale” or “100% Scale", depending upon your printer sengs. Always print Actual Size. Feel
free to sell your bags made with my patern but please do not sell or share the patern. Copyright 2016-2024- RLR Creaons

Fabric pieces.

Set the Piece K/F Heavy Interfacings aside, these will be added later.

For Piece F, fuse the Heavy Interfacing to the Main Fabric piece.

2. Center and fuse all of the fleece pieces to the corresponding Main Fabric pieces overtop the interfacing.

3
Instructions to Complete the Sunday My Way Bag:
Front Slip Pocket:
1. Place the two Front Slip Pocket pieces (Piece F) pieces RIGHT SIDES TOGETHER, aligning the top raw edges.

2. Stch along the top raw edge with a ½” seam allowance.

3. Press the seams open and turn RIGHT SIDES OUT.

4. Press along the top edge of the pocket to flaten the seam, then
topstch across the top edge of the pocket with a ⅛” seam
allowance.

5. Fold the Front Slip pocket you just completed in half widthwise and mark the center along the botom edge.

6. Take one of your Main Fabric, Main Panel (Piece A) pieces that you wish to be the front and fold in half widthwise,
then mark the center along the botom raw edge.

7. With the Main Panel RIGHT SIDE UP, place the

Front Slip Pocket on top, aligning the two center
markings on each. Pin the Pocket to the Main panel
piece, aligning the botom raw edges.

8. Stch down both sides of the Pocket piece and

across the botom to atach it to the Main Panel.
The side raw edges of the Pocket piece will be
covered by the handle pieces later.

Set the Front Exterior Piece aside.

4
Handles:
1. Place one of the Main Fabric Handle and one of the Lining Fabric Handle (Piece K) RIGHT SIDES TOGETHER aligning the
top raw edges.

2. Stch across with a ¼” seam allowance.

3. Press the seams open. The finished Handle piece will now measure 26” x 4”

4. Take the remaining two Handle pieces and repeat Steps 1-3.

Add the Interfacing-

1. Take the two K/F Interfacing pieces and fuse one to the WRONG SIDE of each assembled Handle piece.

Finish the Handles-

1. Take the two finished Handle (Piece K) pieces and, with WRONG
SIDES TOGETHER, fold the handles in half lengthwise with the seam
at one side and press.

2. Open the Handle pieces and fold each raw edge towards the
center seam, then press. Fold the pieces in half and press again.
Each handle piece should now measure 1” wide.

5
3. Topstch across both long sides about ⅛” from the edge.

Attach the Handles to the Main Fabric Main Panels:

1. Take the Exterior Front Main Panel (Piece A) piece, the
one with the Slip Pocket atached to, and place RIGHT SIDE
UP. Measure and mark a vercal line 3 ¾” in from each
side edge, or you can use the patern piece A handle
marking to mark your handle placements. Next, measure
and mark a horizontal line across each vercal line you just
drew 1 ½” from top raw edge. This will aid you in placing
the handle straps.

2. Take one of the prepared Handle (Piece K) pieces and

align the inner edge with the vercal line you drew on one
side of the Main Panel piece, aligning the botom raw edge
of the Handle along the botom raw edge of the Main
Panel. Pin in place.

3. Align the botom raw edge at the other end with the
botom raw edge of the main panel piece, aligning the
inner edge of the Handle piece with the second vercal
line. Pin in place.

*NOTE: You can either place the Exterior fabric RIGHT

SIDE UP or the Lining side fabric up to add some contrast.

4. To aid in sewing the stch box at the top of the Handles,

draw a line 1” down from the horizonal lines you made 1 ½”
down on the Main Panel (2 ½” from the top edge of the Main
Panel piece). Next, draw two diagonal lines from corner to
corner to form an X.

5. Starng at the botom outer edge of the Handle, stch up

one side, following the exisng line of stching unl you
reach the 1 ½” marking at the top. Turn and stch across the
Handle at the 1 ½” marking. Next, stch a 1” rectangular box
at the top. Then, stch down the other side, again following
the exisng line of stching.

6
6. Repeat Step 5 to stch the opposite side of the
Handle piece to the Main Panel.

7. Following Steps 1-6, atach the second Handle to

the second Main Fabric Main Panel (Piece A) piece.

Set the two completed Exterior Main Panel pieces

aside.

Interior Zipper Pocket:

Prepare the Zipper-
1. Place the Zipper Pocket Lining Top (Piece H) piece RIGHT
SIDE UP.

2. Next, place the 10” Zipper, FACE UP, on top of the Zipper
Pocket Lining Top piece and align the top edge of the zipper
tape with the top raw edge of the Zipper Pocket Lining Top.
Pin in place.

The RIGHT SIDE of the Pocket Lining piece should be facing

the WRONG SIDE of the zipper.

*NOTE: Make sure that the zipper stop at the botom of the tape goes past the end of the Pocket Lining pieces so that
when you add your zipper to the zipper opening, it will be out of the way when stching.

If you want the zipper to open either right or le, be sure

that the zipper pull faces that way when you add it to the
Zipper Pocket Lining Top.

3. Stch across with a ¼” seam allowance.

4. Fold the Pocket Lining piece away from the zipper and
press, being careful not to melt the zipper.

7
5. Place the Zipper Pocket Lining Botom (Piece I) piece RIGHT SIDE
UP.

6. Align the unsewn edge of the zipper with the top raw edge of the
Zipper Pocket Lining Botom piece. Make sure that the sides are
aligned with the Zipper Pocket Lining Top you added to the other side
of the zippers. Pin in place.

7. Stch across with a ¼” seam allowance. Fold the Pocket Lining piece
away from the zipper and press, being careful not to melt the zipper.

The finished piece will have the RIGHT SIDES of the

Pocket Lining piece on the back side of the zipper.

Set the finished zipper lining piece aside.

Zipper Pocket Opening-

1. Take one of the Lining Fabric (Piece A) pieces and

fold in half vercally, matching up the side raw edges,
and press or crease to make a centered vercal mark.
Measure down and mark a horizontal line ¾” from
the top raw edge. (This will aid you in placing and
centering the pocket facing piece.)

2. Fold the Zipper Pocket Facing (Piece G) piece in

half widthwise, matching up the short sides, and
press or crease to mark the center.

8
3. Pin the Zipper Pocket Facing piece, FUSIBLE SIDE UP, to the Main Panel piece, aligning the top long edge of the Zipper
Pocket Facing with the horizontal line you drew on the Main Panel and matching the center creases.

4. On the Zipper Pocket Facing, mark a line 1 ¼” down from the top edge (2” below the top edge of the Main Panel).
Draw another line ⅜” under the first line or 1 ⅝” down from the top raw edge of the Zipper Pocket Facing.

5. Connect the two lines to make a rectangle by

measuring 3 ½” from the center crease on both sides
and marking a vercal line on both sides.

*CHECK: You should have a centered rectangle

measuring 7” by ⅜”. The Zipper Pocket Facing should
be centered on the Main Panel and 3” below the top
edge of the Main Panel piece and the Zipper Pocket
Facing is fusible side up.

6. Stch the rectangle lines you just drew through both layers with a stch length of 2.5 (normal) on the long sides, then
changing to a 1.0 stch length on the short sides.
7. Draw a centered horizontal line down the center of the
rectangle you just stched. Measure in ½” from both sides
of the rectangle and draw a short vercal line on both
sides. Form an arrow on each side as pictured.

8. Cut along the center line and all diagonal lines, geng as
close as possible to the corners without cung through
the stches.

Aer cung is completed, you should have a triangle cut

at each end.

9. Pull the Zipper Pocket Facing piece away from the Main Panel piece and crease well with your fingers to create
creases where the seams are.

10. Pull all of the Zipper Pocket Facing piece through the
rectangle opening you just created so it is now at the back
of the Main Panel piece. Press the interfacing down so the
Pocket Facing piece at the opening does not show on the
front side of the Main Panel piece.

Press lightly so that you will be able to lift the interfacing

and reposition if necessary. Once you have everything
perfectly aligned, press the interfacing once more to be
sure it is fused to the back of the Panel piece.

9
Adding the finished Zipper Piece-
1. Place the assembled Zipper pocket piece with the zipper
RIGHT SIDE UP. Be sure that your Zipper Pocket Lining Top is
at the top.

2. Place the Main Panel piece on top of the zipper and center
the zipper within the opening. Be sure that your zipper pull is
inside the zipper opening. Pin in place.

3. With the Main Panel piece RIGHT SIDE UP, stch all the
way around the rectangle with a ⅛” seam allowance to
enclose the zipper.

When you flip the piece over, you will see that the tops of the Pocket Lining pieces are now topstched and away from
the zipper.

Finishing the Exterior Zipper Pocket-

1. Next, fold the Zipper Pocket Lining Top down unl the botom
edge is aligned with the botom edge on the Zipper Pocket Lining
Botom piece. Pin the pieces together along the two side raw
edges and along the botom.

2. Fold the sides of the Main Panel piece out of the way of the
Pocket Lining pieces.

3. Stch down both sides and across the botom of the Pocket
Lining pieces with a ½” seam allowance to close the sides and
botom of your pocket.

You want to be sure you are just stitching the pocket lining pieces
together and not attaching them to the Panel piece.

Your Interior Zipper Pocket is finished.

10
Assemble the Exterior Top Panel:
1. Place one of the Exterior Top Panel (Piece C) pieces RIGHT SIDE UP. Next, center the 18” zipper, FACE DOWN, along
the straight edge, aligning the top of the zipper tape along the raw edge of the Panel piece. Pin in place.

2. Stch all the way across with a ¼” seam allowance. Be sure to stch the zipper to the Top Panel piece with a ¼” seam
allowance to assure your piece is the correct width when completed.

3. Press the Main Panel piece away from the zipper, being careful not to melt the zipper. Then, topstch across with a
⅛” seam allowance.

4. Place the piece RIGHT SIDE UP. Align the straight raw edge of the second Exterior Top Panel (Piece C) piece along the
unstched side of the zipper, WRONG SIDE UP. Pin in place.

5. Stch all the way across with a ¼” seam allowance. Again, you want to be sure to stch the zipper to the Top Panel
piece with a ¼” seam allowance so your finished piece is the correct width when completed.

6. Press the Top Panel piece you just added

away from the zipper, then topstch across
with a ⅛” seam allowance.

Set the assembled Exterior Top Panel piece aside.

11
Assemble the Interior Top Panel:
1.Place one of the Interior Top Panel (Piece B) pieces WRONG SIDE UP. Measure in from both sides, along the long
straight edge, 1” and mark.

2. Place the two Interior Top Gusset (Piece B) pieces RIGHT SIDES TOGETHER, aligning the straight raw edges and pin in
place.

3.With a ½” seam allowance, stch from the side edge to the 1” mark on both sides. Do not sew the center; just mark
and stch the 1” on both sides.

4. Press the seams open on both sides, then fold the unsewn center piece on both sides under ½” and press.

*Tip: You can add a line of fabric glue to the seam allowances and sck them to the back of the panel to keep
them in place. This will keep it nice and flat when you add the Interior to the Exterior during the final assembly.

Set the assembled Interior Top Panel piece aside.

End Tabs:
1. Take the two End Tabs (Piece J) pieces and, with WRONG SIDES
TOGETHER, fold the pieces in half lengthwise and press.

2. Open the pieces and fold each raw edge towards the center fold,
then press. Fold the pieces in half and press again. Each End Tab
piece should now measure 1” wide x 3” long.

3. Topstch across both long sides about ⅛” from the edge on each
piece.

Add End Tabs to Side Panels-

1. Take the two Main Fabric Side Panel (Piece D) pieces and fold each in half vercally, matching up the side raw edges,
and press or crease to make a centered vercal mark along the top raw edge.

12
2. Place the two Side Panels RIGHT SIDE UP. Fold each of the finished End Tabs in
half, matching up the raw ends, then center the raw edges with the top center mark
on one of the Side Panel pieces. Pin in place.

3. Stch the folded End Tabs to the Side Panel pieces with a ¼” seam allowance.

Finish the Gussets:

1. Align the botom raw edge of one of the Exterior Side Panel (Piece D) pieces with a
short side of the Main Fabric Botom Panel (Piece E) piece, RIGHT SIDES TOGETHER,
and pin in place.

2. Stch the two pieces together with ½” seam

allowance.

3. Press the seams open and topstch across the botom ¼” away
from the seam.

4. Align the botom edge of the second Exterior Side Panel (Piece D) piece along the other short edge of the Botom
Panel, RIGHT SIDES TOGETHER, and stch the two pieces together with a ½” seam allowance. Then, press the seam open
and topstch down the Botom
panel ¼” away from the seam.

13
5. Place the completed Exterior Top Panel (Piece C) piece RIGHT SIDE UP. Align the top raw edges of the Side Gussets
with the side edges of the Top Gusset piece, RIGHT SIDES TOGETHER, and pin in place.

6. Stch the top edge of the Side Panels to the Top Gusset piece with a ½” seam allowance, keeping the End Tab pieces
flat against the Side Panels.

Your finished piece will be a big circle shape.

7. Press the seams open, pressing the Side Connectors up and away from the Side Panels. Topstch across the top of the
Side Panels, ¼” away from the seams.

8. Repeat steps 1-6 with the Interior Gusset pieces to assemble the Interior Gusset.

9. Press the seams open and topstch across the Side Panels ¼” away from the seams.

14
Assembling the Exterior and Interior:
Assemble the Exterior-
1. Take the 4 Piece A Main Panels (2 Main and 2 Lining) fold
in half widthwise, and mark the center along the top and
botom of each piece.

2. If desired, you can transfer the markings on the Piece

A patern piece on each of the Main Panel pieces to aid
you in aligning the finished gusset pieces.

3. Take the two assembled Gusset pieces (1 Main and 1 Lining) and fold in
half, matching the seams, press or mark the center at the fold on both
sides of the top and botom of each piece.

4. Open the Zipper all the way on the assembled Exterior Gusset piece and
place on top of one of the Main Fabric Main Panel (Piece A) pieces, RIGHT
SIDES TOGETHER, matching and pinning together the center marks on the
Gusset piece with the Main Panel piece. Pin the side marks to the top and
botom seams of the Side Panels.

*NOTE: If you are using direconal fabric you, will want to pin the
Exterior Front (with the Slip Pocket) to the Gusset with the print facing you.

If you want to orient your zipper so the it opens from the le or the right, then add your Exterior Front to the Gusset
with the zipper pull facing that direcon.

5. Pin all the way around the pieces, easing the two pieces together as you pin.

*NOTE: Be sure to place your pins or clips close

together as you pin around the curved edges to hold
everything in place. To avoid “puckers”, it is ideal to
push the Gusset piece into the curves rather than just
align the very top of the raw edges and pin them
together at the ½” seam allowance you will stch.

6. Stch all the way around the pieces to atach them

together with a ½” seam allowance.

15
*Tip: You may find it easier to get a nice seam around the
curves by stching just the curved corners first with the
Main Panel piece facing up. Then, flip the piece over and
stch all the way around with the Gusset piece face up.

7. Trim the seam allowances along the botom and sides to ¼”. DO NOT trim the seams along the top of the Main Panel
piece where it’s atached to the zipper.

8. Be sure the Zipper is all the way open and repeat steps 4-7 to atach the Exterior Back to the other side of the Exterior
Gusset piece.

Assemble the Interior-

1. Follow the STEPS 3-8 for Assembling the Exterior, except use a ⅝” seam allowance to stch the pieces together. Be
sure when trimming the seam allowances, you do not trim the seams on the Top Panel piece.

Finishing:

*NOTE: For a step-by-step photo tutorial on compleng a drop in lining, you can follow along here:
htps://www.rlrcreaons.com/rlrsewingblog/2016/2/18/how-to-finish-a-bag-with-a-drop-in-style-lining

Or for a video tutorial you can follow along here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=_pqyQEdTK7Q

1. Turn the Interior WRONG SIDE OUT, place the Interior inside the Exterior with the zippered pocket side facing the
Exterior Back. Align the botom and sides so your Interior sits nicely inside the Exterior

2. Fold the top Exterior Top Gusset away from the bag to expose the seam allowance you le untrimmed along the sides
of the zipper.

3. Align the Exterior top seam allowance to the Lining seam allowance on both sides of the Top Gussets and pin
together.

4. Starng as close to the side seams at the end of the zipper as you can, stch through both seam allowances of the
Exterior and Interior across, as far as you can to the side seam on the opposite side of the bag. Be sure your stches are
within the seam allowance of the Exterior. You don’t want to stch past the assembly stches.

Make sure you are only sewing through the seam allowances and keep the Zipper Panel pieces out of the way so you
don’t stch through them. Then, stch the seam allowances together on the opposite side of the Top Gussets.

5. Trim the atached seam allowances, making sure not to trim through the stches. Fold the Top Zipper Panel back in
place.
16
6. Match the top of the Lining Top Panel along the folded in edges along each side of the zipper, covering the stch line
you made when you atached the zipper to the Exterior.

*NOTE: It is beter to use pins to atach the Lining to the Exterior at the zipper tape than clips so it won’t push
the top edges of your lining down too far on the back of the zipper. For ease in stching the Lining to the
Exterior at the opening, you can add a line of glue to the folded in edges of the Lining and adhere it in place right
above the line of stches from installing the zipper on the Zipper Panels.

7. With the Exterior face up, topstch the lining in place, by stching across both sides of the top zipper ¼” away from
the seam or ⅛” below the first line of topstching. Check to be sure you are catching the lining.

8. You can stch across at the top edge of the zipper ends on each side of the zipper to be sure the ends of the lining are
stched down nicely or hand stch the lining piece in place from the interior side to be sure the lining is fully atached.
