Answer ALL the questions in the spaces provided
1. Give two ways in which physics is useful in the field of Medicine. ( 2 marks)
Machines used in the field of medicine such as x-rays, body scanners and lasers are all
applications of physics.

2. Why should one Never plug in foreign materials into electrical sockets? ( 1 mark)
-To avoid electrocution/ electrical shock
3. The mass of a bucket containing sand was found to be 12 kg. If the volume of the sand
was 2900𝑐𝑚3 and that the mass of empty bucket was 0.3 kg, find the density of sand.
(3marks)
Mass of sand = 7 – 0.3 = 6.7 kg
Density = 6 700 ÷ 2 900
= 2.310 g/cm3 .
4. Figure (1) shows a steel needle resting on water surface:

Figure 1

(i) What makes the needle to float in (a)? (1 mark)

Surface tension.

(ii) Explain what would happen if the needle was placed vertically on the water surface
as in figure (b). (2 marks)
The needle breaks the water surface hence sinks.

5. The weight of a 16 kg object is 80 N on a certain planet.

(a) Find the gravitational field strength on the planet. (3 marks)
W = mg
𝑤 80
𝑔= =
𝑚 16
= 5 N/kg

(b) If an object weighs 140 N on the planet, find its mass. (2 marks)
𝑤 140
𝑚= = = 28𝑘𝑔

6. Explain why water on surface of glass smeared with oil forms droplets while on a clean
glass surface it spreads. (2 marks)
On an oily surface, there are weak adhesive forces between water molecules and
molecules of the surface, hence droplets form. On a clean glass surface, the adhesive
forces between water and glass molecules are greater.

5. Figure 2 below shows two blocks A and B placed against a sphere on a metre rule:

Figure 2

Determine the volume of the sphere. (3 marks)

Diameter = 5.9 – 4.8 cm = 1.1 cm
4
Radius = 0.55 cm ;𝑣𝑜𝑙𝑢𝑚𝑒 = 3 𝜋𝑟 3
4
𝜋0.553 = 0.697000𝑐𝑚3

6. Describe briefly how you would use a metre rule and a piece of thread to measure the radius of
a boiling tube. (4 marks)
(i) A knot /a mark is made on the thread.
(ii) The thread is wrapped tightly and closely round the tube,say 10 times.
(iii) A second knot/mark is made at the end.
(iv) The thread is transferred to the ruler and the distance between the two knots/marks is
measured.
(v) The reading is divided by 10 to obtain the circumference (C) of the tube.
(vi) (vi) From the formula 𝑐 = 2𝜋𝑟, the radius is obtained

7. A student recorded the following measurements while using a meter rule: 5.32 cm, 4.9 cm and
8.013 cm. Which is the correct reading? Explain your answer (2 marks)
4.9 cm. The accuracy is correct to 0.1 cm.
8. Define mass and state its SI unit. (2 marks)
Mass (m) is the quantity of matter a body contains. The SI unit of mass is the kilogram (kg).

9. The density of a liquid is 0.75 𝑔⁄𝑐𝑚3 .
(i) Express the density in 𝑘𝑔⁄𝑚3 ( 1 mark)
0.75 𝑔/𝑐𝑚3 = 0.75 × 1000 = 750 𝑘𝑔/𝑚3
(ii) Calculate the volume of 150 gm of the liquid ( 3 marks)
𝑚 𝑚 150
𝐷𝑒𝑛𝑠𝑖𝑡𝑦, 𝜌 = ,𝑉 = 𝑉 = = 200𝑐𝑚3
𝑉 𝜌 0.75

10. The volume of one drop of a liquid was found to be 0.045 ml. If 30 drops were delivered by
a burette from an initial reading of the liquid being 11.4 ml, find the final reading of the liquid.
(3 marks)
Volume of 30 drops of liquid = 0.045 ×30 = 1.35 ml
Final reading = 1.35 + 11.4
= 12.75 ml
11. The mass of a density bottle filled with a liquid is recorded as 89.37 g. Given that the density
of the liquid is 1.21 g/cm3 and the capacity of the bottle is 50 ml, determine the mass of the
bottle. (4 marks)
Mass of liquid = density × volume
= 1.21 × 50
= 60.5 g
Mass of bottle = 89.37 – 60.5
= 28.87 g
12. What is the measurement shown by the scales? (1 mark)

Figure 3

66.7𝑐𝑚 − 64.4𝑐𝑚 = 2.3𝑐𝑚

13. A piece of plastic is moulded to form a cuboid of volume 24𝑐𝑚3 . If the mould is made to
form a cylindrical shape of radius 0.7 cm, determine its height. (3 marks)
Volume of cuboid = Volume of cylinder
24𝑐𝑚3 = 𝜋𝑟 2 ℎ
24𝑐𝑚3 24𝑐𝑚3
𝐻𝑒𝑖𝑔ℎ𝑡 = =
