INTRODUCTION

The purpose of this placement was to gain practical experience in mental health counseling with
children and adolescents at Chainama Hospital in Lusaka, Zambia. Chainama Hospital is a
leading psychiatric hospital providing mental health services to children, adolescents, and adults.
The placement lasted for 6 weeks, from 13 May to 28 June,2024.

Over of the institution

They offer:

Mental health counseling

Psychosocial counseling

Drug abuse therapies

Difference types of mental disorders;

Depression disorder, anxiety disorder, psychosis disorder.

Family therapy

Mental patients are being put on medication by clinicians and doctors

Description of Activities

During the placement, I conducted:

- Individual counseling sessions with 15 clients

- Group counseling sessions with 20 clients

- Family therapy sessions with 5 families

Client demographics:

- Age range: 10-18 years

- Gender: 55% male, 45% female

- Presenting issues: anxiety, depression, trauma, behavioral problems

Assessment tools used:

- Psychological tests (e.g., Beck Depression Inventory, Child Behavior Checklist)

- Interviews (client, family, teacher)

- Observation (client behavior, family dynamics)

competence. I am confident that this experience will enhance my professional development and
future practice.
