Chapter 2.3 Material Handling

The document discusses combined layouts in manufacturing, which integrate traditional process and product layouts to optimize material flow and reduce complexities. It highlights the importance of flow patterns in material handling, detailing various types and factors influencing them, as well as the classification of material handling equipment. Additionally, it emphasizes engineering and economic factors that should be considered in material handling to enhance efficiency and reduce costs.

Combined Layouts

• Layout that Combines all traditional layouts considering product

characteristics and capacity requirements
• Basically combine of process and Product layouts

FLOW PATTERN
• The flow pattern means the system to be adopted for the movement of raw
materials from the beginning and up to the point when it is converted into
finished goods.
• It depends upon the type of layout , in the product layout, the material flow is
short and smooth, while in the process layout it is long and involves many
complexities
• It is related to principle of minimum movements (MHE)
• It helps to eliminating bottlenecks, rushing, back-tracking etc.
• It ensures effective utilization of plant capacity reducing work in process
• It helps in reduction in operating cycle, time and results profitable return on
the investment
Factors Governing the flow Pattern

• External transport facilities

• Number of products to be handled
• Number of operations on each product
• Number of units to be produced
• Number of sub- assemblies made up ahead of assembly line
• Type of plant layout , availability of floor space
Classification of Flow Pattern
Horizontal Flow Pattern (Useful in single storey building) Types
• I-flow or line flow
• L-flow
• U-flow
• S-flow
• O-flow
• Combination of I and U type
• Combination of I and S type
• Combination of I and O type
Describe the different flow patterns. Identify the different
Industries, service center or any other manufacturing industries
which follow the different flow patterns.
2.3 Material Handling
• Materials handling, the movement of raw goods from their native site to the
point of use in manufacturing, their subsequent manipulation in production
processes, and the transfer of finished products from factories and their
distribution to users or sales outlets. materials handling.
• It includes protecting, storing, and controlling the materials, from manufacturing
to distribution.
• Material handling can improve customer service by making products easy to
find, move, and ship out, cut costs by reducing the amount of time spent moving
the products and reduce product damages by properly transporting your
products.
• It also ensures increased safety from permanent and temporary disabilities.

Material handling devices can be classified into three types:
• Lifting and lowering devices
• Transporting devices (horizontal movement)
• Combination devices (lifting and transporting)

1. Block and tackle 1. Wheel barrows 1. Chutes

2. Hand and power 2. Hand and power trucks 2. Hoists with
winches 3. Industrial narrow trolleys running
3. Hoists railways on overhead rails
4. Elevators 4. Tractors and trailers 3. Fork lift truck
5. Pillar crane 5. Pipe lines Pumps 4. Crane trucks
6. Overhead crane 6. Aerial tram ways 5. Different types
of conveyors

Factors to be considered in Material Handling Problems
1. Engineering Factors
2. Economic Factors
1.0 Engineering Factors
1. Nature of materials and products to be handled:
2. Production process and equipment’s
3. Building Construction
4. Layout
5. Existing Material Handling Equipment
6. Production Planning and control
7. Packaging
2.0 The economic factors are:
• Employing gravity feed movements
• Minimizing distances of travel
• by using a system in which the product from the machine directly falls over the material handling equipment
Cost of Equipment, Power, labour cost, Operating Cost, depreciation cost, Space required,
• Proper periodic inspection, repairs and maintenance etc.
