INTEGRATION OF
ARTS IN OTHER
SUBJECTS
WHAT IS ART INTEGRATION

"Arts Integration is an approach to teaching in which

students construct and demonstrate understanding
through an art form. Students engage in a creative
process which connects an art form and another subject
area and meets evolving objectives in both."
Kennedy Center

Arts Integration Supports Individual Needs-

Arts integration is powerfully aligned with the
principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL)
and provides a range of options for accessing,
using, and engaging with learning materials to
accommodate the broad spectrum of learner
variability in every classroom. The options provided
through UDL reduce barriers in the learning
environment for all students while keeping
expectations high.

Arts integration is an inclusionary approach to

teaching that supports all students including
students with disabilities, English language
learners, students experiencing trauma and/or
conflict, and students identified as gifted and
talented. This approach is an educationally powerful
way to provide "whole, healthy, and connected
ways to learn" that support the tenets of Whole
Child initiatives: physical and emotional safety,
active engagement, personalized and challenging
learning.

. The arts are often relegated to the sidelines, but

we've done a deep dive into why it's important for
teachers to integrate the arts and how art
integration in school can have a life-changing
impact on your children.

. The Arts Unlock the Door to Learning

. Art integration is the use of art in other academic

subjects in order to promote learning. It is a way of
using art to teach non- art concepts and skills.
When art is integrated into other subjects, it can
help students to better understand the material. and
retain information. Art integration can also be used
to teach concepts that are not easily learned
through traditional methods.

Art integration can take many forms. It can be as

simple as using a painting to help explain a concept
in history or using music to help teach a math
lesson. There are many resources available to
teachers who want to incorporate art into their
classrooms. There are also organizations that
provide training and support for teachers interested
in using art integration.

IMPORTANCE OF ART
INTEGRATION
Arts integration is an important tool for educators to use
in their classrooms. Learning through the arts unlocks
doors that can't be unlocked any other way.

WHAT IS ARTS INTEGRATION IN
THE CLASSROOM?

Arts integration is a teaching method that incorporates

the arts into other subject areas. It can be used in any
grade level and in any type of classroom. Arts
integration has been shown to improve academic
achievement, increase student engagement, and boost
social and emotional development.

When used correctly, arts integration can be an effective

way to teach any subject. However, it is important to
note that arts integration is not simply adding an art
activity to a lesson. Arts integration must be carefully
planned and structured in order to be successful.

If you are interested in incorporating arts integration into

your classroom, there are a few things to keep in mind.
First, you will need to choose a focus for your arts
integration. This could be a specific subject area such as
math or science, or it could be a theme or concept that
you want to explore across multiple subject areas.

Once you have chosen a focus, you will need to select

appropriate materials and activities. Not all art materials
and activities will be appropriate for every focus. For
example, if you are focusing on math, you will want to
select materials and activities that help students
understand mathematical concepts. Likewise, if you are
exploring a theme such as community, you will want to
select materials.

INTEGRATION OF ART IN OTHER

SUBJECTS

Subjects such as language, social studies, science and

mathematics can be made to connect with art.
Sometimes arts can clarify the subject's concept very
ease. By the subj

Thus, the abstract concepts with in the subjects can be

integrated using different art forms. Learning in this way
helps to increase knowledge and easy learning of the
subject area and also provide better view of arts. This is
what called holistic or complete learning. Art provides a
language foe expression. It can be any form of art.

With the integration of subjects with arts proceed from

different stage such as observing, thinking, imagining,
exploring, experimenting, deducing, recreating and
expressing. These stages come from the active
development of cognitive, affective and psychomotor.
BENEFITS FROM ART
INTEGRATION

 Focuses on basic skills, content and higher level

thinking.
 Encourages lifelong learning.
 Structures learning around themes, big ideas and
meaningful concepts.
 Provides connections among various curricular
disciplines.
 Provides learners opportunities to apply skills they
have learned.
 Encourages active participation in relevant real life
Experiences.
 Captivates, motivates, and challenges learners. 8.
Provides a deeper understanding of content.
 It develops social skills among the students as they
interact with themselves and other.
 It develops confidence among the students.
 It helps to remove boredom and monotony in the
Class.
 It helps students to think out of the box.
 It helps students to develop cognitive and mental
ability.
ART INTEGRATED WITH
LANGUAGE

Visual art can be easily integrated with language and its

concept. For example we have to explain any play of
Shakespeare to students then we can ask students to
perform small scenes for better understanding of play.
Teachers can also explain certain poems with the help
of puppets. Teachers can assign each student certain
character of a play and can explain a particular scene
with the help of drama. Teachers can explain the
concept of verbs such as crying, running, eating by
making faces and doing gestures. Performing arts can
be used to explain the concept of alphabets in primary
and elementary level.

ART INTEGRATION WITH SOCIAL

SCIENCE

Social studies is divided in 3 parts- history, geography

and civics. In history art can be integrated by asking
students to do role play of certain king. Concept of indus
valley, harppan civilization can be well explained using
models made up of clay. In geography, art and drama
can be integrated by explaining the students the concept
of atlas by conducting a quiz. Solar system can be
explained using model made up of balls signifying each
planet. Students can be asked to themselves act as a
leader to explain the role of various leaders in
democracy (civics). Teachers can also divide class into
various groups to explain the concept of rajya Sabha,
lok Sabha. To explain the concept of different zones
teachers can ask students to prepare the model of earth
signifying each layer. Teachers can also explain about
different rulers or king with the help of puppet.
Performing arts can be used to explain various historical
and classical dance forms.
ART INTEGRATION WITH
MATHEMATICS

In mathematics art can be integrated by explaining sums

by using number line as medium. Also different shapes
can be explained by making different shapes using clay
as students will develop interest in it. Charts papers can
also be used to explain various topics. Teachers can
make use of different sized button to explain the concept
of ascending and descending. Performing arts can also
be used by teachers to explain the concept of clock by
asking each student to act as watch and move along the
hand of clock. Concept of increasing and decreasing
order can be explained by asking students to stand in
the line according to their height first in increasing order
then in decreasing order.
ART INTEGRATION WITH
HINDI
Art integrated in Hindi. Certain chapters and poems can
be well explained by asking students to perform nukkad
natak as it will develop interest of students and
encourage students to learn more efficiently. Teachers
can also organize an extempore to develop better
understanding of certain topics among the students.
Concept of Hindi grammar can also be well understood
by making using of flash cards.
ART INTEGRATED WITH
SCIENCE

In case of physics, topic of electricity can be well

explained by asking students to make a working model
of electric circuit this will lead to better understanding of
subject. Many other topics can be well explained by
making charts, 3-D models. This will lead to better clarity
of topic.
In case of chemistry, structure of atom can be well
explained by asking students to make neat and well
labelled chart on structure of atom.3-D model can also
be made to compare different models of atom. Certain
concept can also be made clear by making beautiful
charts.

In biology concept of digestion can be well explained by

clay modelling. Even teachers can use different waste
material to make a working model which will provide
better insight of the topic. As biology is full of diagrams
teachers can give activity to students to make well
labelled charts of certain topics to increase students
understanding of certain topic. 3-D model of DNA can be
made using straws depicting each nucleotide and proper
bonds. Breathing mechanisms can be well explained
using working model made from plastic bottles, straws
and balloons. To explain the concept of food teachers
can make use of various food made with clay then
students can differentiate among them. Puppets can
also be used by teachers to explain the concept of
animal and birds. Teachers can also explain the concept
of body parts using gestures and act by asking students
to participate in it. Concept of food chain can also be
explained with the help of play or also by using flash
cards. Teachers can also explain the concept of
deforestation, pollution, importance of healthy and
nutritious food by organizing play and giving each
student a specific role ton perform.
