PRACTICE WORKSHEET: 2024-25
SUBJECT: SCIENCE (PHYSICS)

LESSON NO. & NAME: 09 GRAVITATION WORKSHEET NO.: 09A

NAME: ROLL NO.: CLASS / DIV.: IX – D/L

1Mark questions (MCQs, Assertion & Reasoning)

Q1. i) Which of the following is true when a Mango falls from a Mango Tree?
a. Only the Earth attracts the Mango.
b. Only the Mango attracts the Earth.
c. Both Mango and Earth attract each other
d. Both Mango and Earth repel each other

ii) The weight of an object on the Moon’s surface is

a. 1/3 rd of the weight on Earth
b. 1/5 rd of the weight on Earth
c. 1/6th of the weight on Earth
d. 1/2 nd of the weight on Earth

iii) Which of the following is true of two objects of different masses falling freely near the surface
of the moon?
a. They both have different accelerations.
b. They have the same velocities at any instant
c. They experience forces of the same magnitude
d. They change their inertia

iv) A statement of Assertion is given and a corresponding statement of Reason is given just below
it. Of the statements, given below, mark the correct answer as:
Assertion: Universal gravitational constant G is a scalar quantity.
Reason: The value of G is same throughout the universe.
(a) Both assertion and reason are true and reason is the correct explanation of assertion.
(b) Both assertion and reason are true butQ2reason is not the correct explanation of assertion.
Acceleration due to gravity of our earth varies at poles and equator due to the following reasons:

(c) Assertion is true but reason is false. The centrifugal on any object on the earth depends on the distance of the object from the axis of rotation of the earth.
1. Rotation of the earth:

g/= g - ω2R
(d) Both Assertion and Reason are false. Any object at the equator is at the maximum distance from the axis. Whereas, an object at the pole will be near the axis. So, acceleration due to gravity is
less at the equator than at the poles.
2. Non sphericity of the earth:
The radius in the equatorial plane is about 21 Km larger than the radius along the poles. The value of g is accordingly larger at poles and less at the
equator.
Since, acceleration due to gravity is large at the poles than at the equator, the packet dropped at the north pole will reach the earth's surface earlier
Very short answer type questions compared to the packet dropped at the equator.

Q2. Identical packets are dropped from two aeroplanes, one above the equator and other above the
north pole, both at height h. Assuming all conditions to be identical, will those packets take same
time to reach the surface of Earth? Justify your answer.

Q3. State the Universal law of Gravitation? Write the formula to find the magnitude of the
gravitational force between the earth and an object on the surface of the earth.

Q4. a) What is free fall?

b) Find the weight of Uma, who weighs 36kg.
Short answer type questions
Q5. The radius of earth is 6370 Km and of mars is 3400 Km. If an object weighs 200 N on earth
what will be its weight on mars. The mass of mars is 0.11 that of earth.

Q6. A stone is dropped from a height of 100 m on earth. At the same time, another stone is thrown
vertically upwards from a ground with a velocity of 50 m/s. At what height from the ground will
the stone meet?

Q7. What is the magnitude of the gravitational force exerted by a 15 Kg mass on a 25 Kg mass
separated by a distance of 25 cm. What is the acceleration produced on each mass?

Q8. (a) The earth and the moon are attracted to each other by gravitational force. Does earth attract
the moon with a force that is greater or smaller or the same as the force with which the moon attracts
the earth? Why?
(b) Amit buys few grams of gold at the poles as per the instruction of one of his friends. He hands
over the same when he meets him at the equator. Will the friend agree with the weight of gold
bought? If not, why?

Long answer type question

Q9. (a) State the factors on which acceleration due to gravity(g) depends?
(b) A stone is allowed to fall from the top of a tower 100m high and at the same time another
stone is projected vertically upwards from the ground with a velocity of 25m/s. Calculate when
and where the two stones will meet.

Q10. (a) Obtain a relation between ‘g’ and ‘G’.

(b) Give any three points of difference between ‘g’ and ‘G’

Case based question

Q11. We know that the earth attracts every object with a certain force and this force depends on the
mass (m) of the object and the acceleration due to the gravity (g). The weight of an object is the
force with which it is attracted towards the earth. Mathematically
W=mxg
Where, W= weight of object; m= mass of object; g= acceleration due to the gravitational force
As the weight of an object is the force with which it is attracted towards the earth, the SI unit of
weight is the same as that of force, that is, Newton (N). The weight is a force acting vertically
downwards; it has both magnitude and direction. We have learnt that the value of g is constant at a
given place. Therefore, at a given place, the weight of an object is directly proportional to the mass,
say m, of the object, that is, W αm. It is due to this reason that at a given place, we can use the
weight of an object as a measure of its mass. Weight is measurement of the gravitational force applied on the body. As we
know that a force has magnitude as well as direction and we call such a quantity
Answer the following questions: as a vector quantity, hence we can say that weight is a vector quantity.
1. Whether weight is scalar quantity or vector quantity? Justify your answer.
2. Differentiate between mass and weight. Weightlessness is a state when an object does not weigh anything. It occurs only
3. When does an object show weightlessness? when a body is in a state of free fall under the effect of gravity alone.
4. Two objects of masses 10kg and 20kg separated by distance 10m. What is gravitational
force between them?
OR
5. On the moon’s surface, the acceleration due to gravity is 1.67 ms-2. If the radius of the moon
is 1.74 × 106 m, calculate the mass of the moon.
