GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS:
i. There are 35 questions in all. All questions are compulsory
ii. This question paper has five sections: Section A, Section B, Section C, Section D and
Section E. All the sections are compulsory.
iii. Section A contains eighteen questions of 1 mark each, Section B contains seven
questions of two marks each, Section C contains five questions of three marks each,
section D contains three long questions of five marks each and Section E contains two
case study-based questions of 4 marks each.
iv. There is no overall choice. However, an internal choice has been provided in section
B, C, and D. You have to attempt only one of the choices in such questions.
v. Use of calculators is not allowed.

SECTION - A
1. When two particles each of mass m are dropped from a height ‘h’ and ‘2h’ respectively

20. A particle of mass 0.40 kg moving initially with constant speed of 10m/s to the
north is subject to a constant force of 8.0 N directed towards south for 30s. Take at
that instant, the force is applied to be t = 0, and the position of the particle at that
time to be x = 0, predict its position at t = -5s, 25s? (2)
OR
Three blocks with masses m, 2m and 3m are connected
by strings, as shown in the figure. After an upward
force F is applied on block m, the masses move upward
at constant speed v. What is the net force on the block
of mass 2m? (g is the acceleration due to gravity)

21. An engine pumps up 100 kg of water through a height of 10m in 5s. If the efficiency
of the engine is 60%, what is the power consumed by the engine ? (2)
22. Give reason (i) why spokes are fitted in the cycle wheel? (ii) Why do we prefer to use
a wrench of long arm? (2)
23. A copper block of mass 1.5kg is heated to a temperature of 250oC and then placed
on a large ice block. What is the maximum amount of ice that it can melt? Specific
heat of copper is 0.39 J g-1 K-1, latent heat of fusion of ice = 335 J g-1 (2)
24. State the fist law of thermodynamics. Express it mathematically. (2)
25. What do you mean by terminal velocity? Write the expression for the same for a
spherical body moving in a viscous medium. (2)

SECTION - C
26. A projectile fired with a velocity ‘𝑢’ making an angle 𝜃 with the horizontal. Derive
the relations for the (a) maximum height (b) range of the projectile. (3)
27. Obtain the amount of work done in moving a body up a rough inclined plane. (3)
28. (a) What do you mean by an ‘elastic collision’ ? (3)
(b) A body of mass m1 collides elastically with another body of mass m2 at rest. If
the velocity of m1 after collision becomes 2/3 times its initial velocity, find the ratio
of their masses.

During the shoot of his movie ‘Satyagraha’, director Prakash Jha, known to be a
perfectionist, used a water cannon on his own cast members including Amitabh
Bachchan, Ajay Devgan & Kareena Kapoor.
(a) Assuming that the water from the cannon has an initial velocity of 20 m/s
and if the actors are 20m away from the cannon, what should be the angle
from the horizontal at which the cannon should be placed. Ignore the air
resistance and height of the cannon from the ground. Take g = 10m/s2.
(b) Show that the water fired from the canon at an angle 𝜃 with the horizontal
follows a parabolic path.
SECTION - D
31. (a) Define torque. What rule is used to determine its direction? Establish a relation
between torque and moment of inertia.
(b) The moment of inertia of a body about a given axis is 1.2 kg/m2. Initially the
body is at rest. In order to produce a rotational kinetic energy of 1500J, for how
much duration, an acceleration of 25 rad/s2 must be applied about that axis? (5)
OR
Prove that center of mass of an isolated system moves with a uniform velocity along
a straight-line path. (b) Consider a two-particle system with particles having masses m1
and m2. If the first particle is pushed towards the centre of mass through a distance d, by
what distance should be second particle be moved, so as to keep the centre of mass at the
same position?
32. (a) Find the total energy of the particle executing SHM and show graphically the variation
of P.E. and K.E. with time in SHM.
(b) A body executes SHM of time period 6 s. If the mass be 0.1 kg., its velocity 1 s after it
passes through its mean position be 3 m/s, find its KE and PE. (5)
OR
What is a simple pendulum? Find an expression for the time period and frequency of a
simple pendulum. (b) The length of a simple pendulum executing SHM is increased by
21%. What is the percentage increase in the time period of the pendulum of increased
length?
33. a) What is meant by an ideal fluid? (5)
b) Obtain the equation of continuity of an ideal fluid flowing through a pipe.
c) Water is flowing through two horizontal pipes of different diameters which are
connected together. In the first pipe the speed of water is 4 m/s and the pressure is
2 x 104 Pa. Calculate the speed and pressure of water in the second pipe. The
diameters of the pipes are 3 cm and 6 cm respectively.
OR
a) Derive an expression for the excess pressure inside a liquid drop.
b) Find the work done in blowing a soap bubble of surface tension 0.06 N/m from
a radius of 2cm to 5 cm.
c) How is surface energy related to surface tension?

SECTION - E
34. CASE STUDY: Astronaut Wing Commander Rakesh Sharma made India proud and
had his name etched in history when he spent seven days, 21 hours, and 40 minutes
in space on board the Salyut 7 space station. He was the first Indian to travel to
space. This achievement came with a joint Indian Space Research Organisation
(ISRO) and the Soviet Interkosmos space programme. In a joint (the Soviet Union
and India) TV news conference then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi asked Rakesh
Sharma how India looked from space (Upar se Bharat Kaisa dikhta hai aapko?), and
he proudly replied ‘Sare jahan se accha, Hindustan hamara’, quoting the poem by
Dr. Muhammad Iqbal. (4)

35. CASE STUDY:


When two sound waves of
slightly different frequencies
travelling along the same
path in the same direction in
a medium superpose upon
each other, the intensity of
resultant sound at any point in the medium rises and falls alternately with time.
These periodic variations in the intensity of sound caused by the superposition of
two sound waves of slightly different frequencies is called beats. The number of
beats produced per second is called beat frequency. (4)
(i) Derive the expression for the speed of a wave of a wave in terms of 𝜔 and 𝑘.
(ii) State the reason for the formation of beats.
(iii) What is the frequency of beats when two sounds of frequencies 256Hz and 260
Hz are superposed on each other?

CASE STUDY: Thermal expansion is the phenomenon of expansion in due to heat.
It has various applications in our daily life such as bimetallic strip. The invention of
the bimetallic strip is generally credited to John Harrison an eighteenth-century
clockmaker who made it for his third marine chronometer of 1759 to compensate
for temperature-induced changes in the balance spring. Bimetallic strip consists of
two strips of dissimilar metals, which are mechanically joined either by rivets or by
being fused together along their length to form a structure that responds to changes
of temperature.

(i) In above diagram if the aluminium strip is fused above the steel strip, will the
bell ring in case of fire?
(ii) A bimetallic strip is made of metal M1 over the top of metal M2. On cooling
through the same temperature M1 contracts more than M2. When the strip is
heated, in which direction it will bend?
(iii) A bimetallic strip rotates uniformly about its perpendicular bisector. If the
temperature of the strip rises how the speed of rotation will be affected.
(iv) The coefficient of volume expansion of a material is 25 x 10-5 K-1. What is the
fractional change in its density for a 300 C rise in temperature?
