History is rich of many important people like scientists, inventors, philosophers,

mathematicians and others who have contributed positively in making huge improvements in
different fields. Elias Zerhouni is an Algerian-born American scientist, radiologist and
biomedical engineer. He was born in a small village called Nedroma in western Algeria on April
12, 1951. When he was a kid, Zerhouni was influenced by both his father was a math professor
and by his maternal uncle, a well-known radiologist. Zerhouni chose radiology as his field, and
after receiving his medical degree in 1975 from the University of Algiers, he moved to
the United States at the age of 24. Zerhouni wanted to achieve his dreams in Algeria but he
faced many obstacles like the negligence of scientific research and the lack of financial support.
After immigrating to the U.S, he has become a leader in the fields of radiology and medicine.
Zerhouni held the positon of Director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) of the United
States of America from 2002 to 2008. In November 2009, Dr. Zerhouni was appointed one of
the first presidential U.S. science envoys by President Obama. His many contributions include
promotion of genetic research, support for advances of biodefense research and helping raise
awareness of women's heart disease. All in all, Algeria should be proud of all the Algerian
talented individuals in all fields.
