B. PROJECT DESCRIPTION

a. Objectives

To develop an area ideal for agroforestry and seedling production area which
could serve as a demonstration point to enlighten the community on the significance
of environmental conservation and to promote local employment.

b. Project Cost: P2,000,000

c. Total Land Area : 1,000 sqm
d. General/Land Use Classification: Protected Area/Forest Land
II. PROJECT DESCRIPTION

A. Project Location and Area

The proposed 1, 000 square meter land to be developed is situated in Purok Tres,
So. Bangkang Kumon, Brgy. Palili, Samal, Bataan with the geographical coordinates
120°25”56.9’ E, 14°44”13’.2’ N. The area falls within the Multiple Use Zone of the
Bataan Natural Park

B. Project Rationale

The area is intended for agroforestry purposes which could promote

environmental awareness and appreciation to the community as well as local
employment. A plant nursery is proposed to be established for propagation and growing
of indigenous tree species such as Pterocarpus indicus (Narra), Ficus nota (Tibig),
Shorea astylosa (Yakal), among others. Other facilities which will be built are
Vermicomposting Shed, edible garden, camping/picnic site, ecotrail and horseback riding
trail. Sustainable practices will also be observed by promoting plastic-free or zero waste
campaigns, utilizing organic or eco-friendly building materials for proposed structures,
and applying the use of rainwater harvesting and solar panels for sustainable water source
and electricity, respectively.
Since the location of the project site is overlooking Manila Bay, a view deck is
also planned to be constructed, as well as an infinity pool, a recreational area, and a farm-
to-table restaurant, if possible, wherein people could relax and enjoy nature and what
Palili has to offer.

C. Project Development Plan, Process and Components

The project shall be undertaken by phases and components. Climate and

weather conditions shall be considered for the period of project implementation.

a. Agroforestry Development Component

This component is an association of both agricultural and forestry practices

which constitute a more diverse, productive, profitable, and sustainable planting
technology which is commonly applied to upland developments. This concept
involves soil conservation measures and varied spatial arrangement and processes.

For the proposed project, an alternate strip planting of trees, shrubs and
agricultural species will be accomplished. Native tree species and other planting
materials will be naturally propagated from the nursery which will also be established
to ensure effective and efficient nurturing of seedlings.

b. Nursery Establishment

A nursery for both tree and agricultural species will be established to produce
high quality seedlings and ensure organic/natural plant propagation. This
infrastructure will be supplied by a solar-powered misting system for effective water
management of planting materials which water will be sourced from harvested
rainwater (depending on the availability) or through natural spring water which is
highly available within the area.
Several seedling beds will be constructed, a potting shed, sorting area for
vermicast and composted food waste and hardening off beds.

c. Vermicomposting Area

Organic ways of planting and growing crops and species will be

implemented through the benefits of vermicomposting. A facility or a designated
composting area will be established which will house African Night Crawlers and
be fed with banana stalks, fruits and vegetable peels, dried leaves and other
organic matter.

d. Infrastructures

A recreational facility could contribute to the appreciation and tranquility

of people who would occasionally visit the area towards nature. An infinity pool
will be established facing the seaside, overlooking the picturesque mountain view;
camping/picnic designated areas will be placed with tables and benches made up
of Non-Timber Forest Products; a retreat facility which could facilitate
environment-related trainings and the like; and a farm-to-table restaurant which
will serve locally and organically grown ingredients.

e. Protection and Maintenance

Local laborers will be hired to secure and maintain the area. Their duties and
responsibilities include foot patrol, weeding, plant propagation, site maintenance and
perform other safety and conservation measures.
D. Description of Project Phases

The proposed project shall be implemented in several phases as follows:

a. Pre-development Phase

The project proponent will secure the necessary permits and clearances from the
Protected Area Management Board and other concerned government agencies.

Further research, development and survey will be conducted with the assistance of
the Protected Area Management Office - Bataan Natural Park to determine appropriate
and suitable measures to attain the objectives of this project.

b. Development Phase

When all the pertinent requirements are complied, site maintenance will be
conducted in order to establish the various infrastructures intended to be built. Mother
plants and seeds will be procured from the Department of Environment and Natural
Resources, Department of Agriculture, Institute of Plant Breeding and Bureau of Plant
Industry.

E. Project Duration and Schedule

The projected duration of the project development would take approximately 10

months. Nursery construction will begin right after the project approval followed by the
establishment of Eco trail and horseback riding trail as well as vegetation control,
weeding, set up of natural windbreak and firebreak.

III. Land Features/Environmental Description

A. Physical Environment

The area is elevated and has sloping terrain. It is accessible through a concrete
road which is only approximately 3-meter wide. The soil type is Antipolo Clay
characterized by reddish brown in color.
