Lect 3 Regenerative cycles

The document discusses the Ideal Regenerative Rankine cycle used in steam power plants, focusing on the process of extracting steam from the turbine to heat feed-water, which improves efficiency. It includes examples and calculations related to net work output and thermal efficiency for various steam conditions. The document also covers energy balance equations for both open and closed feedwater heaters.

Regenerative Cycle

The Ideal Regenerative Rankine cycle
A practical regeneration process in steam power plants is accomplished
by extracting, or “bleeding,” steam from the turbine at various points.
This steam is used to heat the feed-water instead of generating power .
The device where the feed-water is heated is called feed water heater
where the input heat in the boiler is decreased
Also, this quantity of steam could have produced more work by
expanding further in the turbine. So the work output will decrease The
change in efficiency depends upon the relative decrease in both of
Heat input and work
The extracted steam from the turbine is used to heat the feed-water
instead of generating power . The device where the feed-water is
heated is called feed water heater where the input heat in the boiler is
decreased

A steam power plant operates on an ideal regenerative Rankine
cycle. Steam enters the turbine at 6 MPa and 450°C and is
condensed in the condenser at 20 kPa. Steam is extracted from
the turbine at 0.4 MPa to heat the feedwater in an open
feedwater heater. Water leaves the feedwater heater as a
saturated liquid. Show the cycle on a T-s diagram, and
determine (a) the net work output per kilogram of steam flowing
through the boiler and (b) the thermal efficiency of the cycle.
EX 3
Consider an ideal steam regenerative Rankine cycle with
two open feedwater heaters. Steam enters the turbine at
5 MPa and 400°C and exhausts to the condenser at 30
kPa. Steam is extracted from the turbine at 10 bar and 3
bar for the open feedwater heaters. Show the cycle on a
T-s diagram with respect to saturation lines, and
determine (a) the turbine work in kJ/kg b) the heat added
in kJ/kg c) the thermal efficiency d) the mass flow rate of
steam through the boiler for a net power output of 250

y
1-y

Energy balance in closed feed water heater

yh7+(1-y)h2 = yh3+(1-y)h9
In CFWH, we designed it such that h9=h3 and
h3 exit in saturated case
In CFWH, we designed it such that T 3=T9 so h9=h3
h3 exit in saturated liquid
Then get y from
yh7+(1-y)h2 = yh3+(1-y)h9

If we do not neglect work of pump II, wp=0.001(P4-P3)

h4=wp +h3

To get h5 : make energy balance for the mixing point

(1-y)h9+yh4=1h5
You can neglect work of Pump II , h4=h3 and we can deduce
h4=h3=h9=h5
Wt = h3- yh7 - (1-y)h8 qin= h6+h5

Wnet =Wt – wp1-wp2
