FLIGHT CONTROL SYSTEM Points To Remember

Always maneuver to fly the symbolic aircraft wing tips to the command
bars to satisfy pitch and bank commands.

Never lead the command bars since the computer calculates exactly the
rightamount of anticipation.

Always check the annunicaitor display to verify that proper switching has
taken place.

The pilot may preset the missed approach heading during the approach to
the runway so that the missed approach steering command will be avail-
able by pressing the HDG mode, automatically canceling the GA mode.
To intercept and track outbound on the Back Course, use HDG mode to
keep from capturing the false lobes of the Back Course glide slope.

Course may be changed in the NAV/VOR mode as long as the course

change is not more than 10 degrees. If the course change is more than
10 degrees, the NAV mode should be cycled momentarily to the off posi-
tion to establish a new intercept.

When using pitch synchronization, push button down and release. Com-
mand bars will move, to synchronize, to the new pitch attitude. Pitch
synchronization will not function in glide slope and/or altitude hold modes.

For smooth engagement, always have command bars opposite the sym-
bolic aircraft before.switching to autopilot.

On ILS approach always set the omni bearing pointer to the published
front course inbound bearing for both Front and Back Course approaches.

If HDG and NAV modes will not engage check autopilbt turn command
knob is in detent.

If unequal bank angles, HDG or NAV offsets, are noted check rudder trim
(ball position) and the latei•al trim on the autopilot controller for wings

After the engines are started and the ADI and HSI have stabilized, the FLIGHT CONTROL SYSTEM

at each wing tip. These command bars move up and down to indicate the
proper position of the wing tips. The pilot merely flies the wing tips to
the two bars to follow the calculated flight path determined by the com-
puter. In this way climbs, descents, or turns are easily and accurately
executed.

For automatic flight the autopilot on-off switch on the autopilot controller,
shown in Figure 2-1, is activated. Pitch and roll command controls, and
the yaw damper on-off switch are also located on this unit. All other
normal modes of flight are controlled from the Mode Selector.

The yaw damper is an independent system and provides yaw axis s.tabili-
zation when engaged. The panel-mounted turn-and-slip indicator pro-
vides yaw rate signals to operate the rudder servo. The autopilot does
not have to be on to engage the yaw damper.
