These days, people can choose from a wide variation of glasses. The most
common type of eyewear is single-vision glasses. These have just one power,
although if a person’s eyesight is slightly different from eye to eye, lenses of two
different powers can be used. __58__ However, they can’t help people cope with both
situations. For that, one solution is to get bifocal lenses, which have two different
5/9
prescriptions. __59__ The bottom part, a D-shaped segment, is for looking at things
that are close. Meanwhile, the top section is used to look at objects that are far away.
A choice that has become much more common than bifocals is known as
progressive lenses. These provide more differences in the corrective power of the
lenses. __60__ Therefore, a shift of the eyes allows people to see at different distances.
This changes the prescriptions people view from. Progressive lenses are more
expensive than single-vision glasses or bifocals, but many people buy them because

glasses are available as well. Other types of glasses are more task-specific.

(A) The Amber room was once a huge, amazing piece of art, but its fate remains
a mystery to this day. This much is known about it, though. As suggested by the
name, the Amber Room was once a room full of amber, which is the fossilized
tree resin from ancient forests. To be more exact about the description of it, the
6/9
room was 55 square meters of wall space covered with approximately six tons of
amber. It also had mirrors, gold leaf, and gemstones, creating such a magnificent
sight that people used to call it the “Eighth Wonder of the World.”
The construction of the Amber Room started in 1701 in Prussia. During the
construction, Tsar Peter the Great of Russia came on a visit and was fond of the
amber panels. Thus, the Prussian king Frederick William I presented the Amber
Room to Peter the Great as a gift in 1716. It was then placed in the Catherine
Palace in 1755. To fit it into its new, larger space, several craftsmen worked on
the room in the following years, using additional amber to adorn it. The redesign
work was completed in 1770. It remained a prominent Russian treasure until Nazi
Germany invaded Russia in the 1940s. The Germans stole it by tearing it down,
packing it into 27 crates, and taking it away. This is where the mystery begins
because the magnificent material has never been seen since.
No one knows exactly what happened to the Amber Room. But that hasn’t
stopped people from guessing about its fate. According to one theory, it was
destroyed by bombing raids by the Allies. Another theory claims that the contents
of the room were boarded onto a German ship that was sunk and now lies
somewhere deep in the ocean. It’s likely we will never know what really
happened.
64. According to the passage, which of the following is NOT true?
(A) The Amber Room was once a masterpiece.

(B) Desperate to treat diseases, scientists are testing ways of editing human
DNA. Known as gene editing, this process involves changing a gene to correct its
problems and protect it against certain diseases. Gene editing is a lot like editing a
movie: Scenes or images can be added, removed, or put in a different order. Gene
7/9
editing techniques insert, remove, change, or replace specific parts of a person’s
DNA.
However, critics argue that such techniques could also be used to create
so-called designer babies. Therefore, they worry that parents may be tempted to
edit their children’s genes to make them smarter, stronger, or more “perfect.”
These changed genes would then be passed on to future generations, which could
have consequences in the long term.
We like to think that nature is perfect, but actually, nature is full of errors.
Evolution gets rid of these errors by letting them die. So, should we be trying to
fix these errors through gene editing? Of course, parents just want to do what is
best for their children, but is gene editing going too far?
Science has given us the power to shape life. Nevertheless, many people
believe we should not be interfering with nature in this way. Such people believe
that through gene editing, humans are trying to play God. For scientists, however,
the potential benefits outweigh the possible risks. So, how far are we willing to
explore this technology?
67. What is the purpose of this article?
(A) To persuade readers to accept gene editing. (B) To describe the
process of gene editing. (C) To question whether gene editing is morally
right. (D) To inform readers of the advantages of gene editing.
68. Which of the following best describes the attitude of people who are against
gene editing?
(A) Man proposes, God disposes. (B) Let nature take its course.
(C) Where there is a will, there is a way. (D) Curiosity killed the cat.
