WESTCONNEX M4-M8
LINK
Civil Works Design Presentation
Prepared by: Mayank Singh Bora
Project Overview
• Project Location: Rozelle, Sydney, NSW, Australia
• Client: Transport for NSW (TfNSW) & WestConnex
• Budget: $3.9 billion
• Start Date: 2019 | Completion Date: 2024
• Primary Objective: Improve traffic flow, reduce congestion, and
enhance connectivity
Design Requirements &
Functional Specifications
• Multi-level tunnel system and surface interchange
• Grade-separated connections for major roadways (M4, M5, City
West Link)
• Tunnel ventilation, noise barriers, and sustainable infrastructure
• Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) and smart tolling solutions
Proposed Design Concept 1 -
Multi-Level Tunnel System
• Multi-tier underground tunnels with dedicated ramps
• Separate lanes for local, regional, and freight traffic
• Emergency lanes, adaptive lane control, and automated traffic
management
• Reduces congestion, improves travel efficiency, but has higher
costs
Proposed Design Concept 2 - Semi-
Underground Interchange with
Flyovers
• Combination of underground tunnels and elevated flyovers
• Reduces excavation and tunneling costs while maintaining
efficiency
• Hybrid ventilation system improves air quality management
• Requires additional noise mitigation and urban planning
considerations
Environmental & Community
Impacts
• Air Quality: Tunnel ventilation and filtration systems
• Noise & Vibration: Acoustic barriers and restricted work hours
• Hydrology: Stormwater management to prevent flooding
• Biodiversity: Reforestation programs and habitat protection
• Community Impact: Stakeholder engagement and compensation
policies
Risk Management Strategies
• Geotechnical Risks: Ground stabilization and tunnel reinforcement
• Air Quality & Emissions: High-capacity ventilation and real-time
monitoring
• Construction Disruptions: Traffic detours and phased work
schedules
• Cultural Heritage: Preservation of historic sites and Indigenous
consultation
Next Steps & Approval Request
• Finalize preferred design concept based on stakeholder feedback
• Conduct further environmental and geotechnical assessments
• Obtain formal approval from Transport for NSW and regulatory
bodies
• Implement final project adjustments and begin construction phase
