CHECKLIST

This Checklist is to be completed by the officer of the Watch/Master and in conjunction with
the duty engineer where required prior to channel transits and arrival in Port and a Log
Entry made.
The Officer completing the checklist MUST enter his initials as confirmation

* Item requires positive answer. If negative, vessel is in a NO GO situation and must not proceed until
the risk has
been assessed by the Master and the Chief Engineer. Consultation with the Management Office may
be required.
** Baltic Sea, North Sea, N. America, California CARB and Caribbean

CHECKS 0 TO 12 HOURS PRIOR “Stand By Engines” (SBE) FOR ARRIVAL (WEEKLY IF SHORT
VOYAGE)
(Note: Checks can be combined and carried out in one session if required)
Visual inspection of primary and secondary steering gear and connecting linkage*
Confirm operation of:
Each remote steering gear control system*
Each steering position located on the navigating bridge.*
Each rudder angle indicator in relation to the actual position of the rudder.*
The movement of the rudder in hand steering mode*
All internal vessel control communications and vessel control alarms.*
Storage batteries for emergency lighting and power systems in vessel control and propulsion
machinery spaces*
ER aware of fuel changeover requirements (e.g. **ECA)

All ships equipped with MEPC.107(49) Oil Content Meters (OCM) must ensure that the
Engineering Department staff can retrieve the “historical data” upon request by PSC
authorities. All engine room alarm history, Oil Record Book (ORB) entries, OCM history and
tank soundings must match with respect to dates and tank levels. Any deviation must be
investigated, corrected, and if necessary reported to flag. The use of “white out” is not
permitted in ORBs. All OCM seals must be intact and not tampered. All ships must
demonstrate that the Oily Water Separator (OWS), OCM, if equipped, and 3-way valve are
fully operational and crew able to test in accordance with written test procedures. Ensure
OWS piping systems are in accordance with ship’s approved drawings.

In addition for US waters – refer to 33 CFR 164.25


Note: Equipment shall be tested no more than 12 hours before entering or getting underway into the
navigable waters of the United States – begin at 12NM seaward of the baseline.
