My Topic - Journal 8

Of the many social challenges that require attention, the issue of inequality in people’s
income is one that cannot be ignored. Income inequality relates to the disparities in income
earners or consumers in any society or country.
This problem is important because not only it magnifies the differences in the existing
social hierarchy, but also it prevents individuals from upgrading their financial status and
generally contributes to the unsustainability of the observed societies’ structure. It has adverse
social impacts such as low education and healthcare provision to the low-income earners, high
social inequality and low economic development as most of the wealth is concentrated in a few
people.
One of the possible measures to prevent the growth of income disparities might be to
adopt progressive taxation. Overall, there is agreement with the view that through progressive
taxation, which involves setting higher taxes for high earners and the wealthy, society is made
more equitable by reallocating resources that are collected and distributed. This approach is
meant to finance social necessities that act as support to the underprivileged groups of society
where; subsidies to finance education, health care and job training programs for the needy.
The progressive taxation does not only remedy the present economic status but also helps
in building a unified society wherein citizens accept the fact that someone has to pay more than
others for the benefit of all. It makes those who benefited more from economic success give back
more to society by providing for the needs of the majority than giving it to the few wealthy
persons, thus creating equality between those with loads of wealth and those with no wealth at
all.
Furthermore, when paying for these services, through progressive taxation, government
can guarantee social services delivery under better economic circumstances that would in turn
give a better chance towards improving every citizen’s quality of life and productiveness for the
benefits of the society. Therefore, progressive taxation is particularly significant in fighting
against income disparity, and contributing towards the formation of the society.

Professor’s feedback: Topic is fine, but narrow it down a little to one particular
society so you can focus on more specifics. Maybe focus on Income Disparity
and Progressive Taxation in the United States.
