COLLOQUIAL LANGUAGE
Colloquialism is also known as
colloquial language is a form of
speaking which uses an informal
tone and words. They are often (students are
regional or specific to a particular listening)
culture. Colloquial expressions are
like shortcuts in language, making it
easier to express common idea or
feeling.
Example of colloquial
expressions:
 Spill the tea (to share gossip)
 Hit the road (to leave)
 Catch you later (goodbye)
 Piece of cake (easy)
FEATURES OF COLLOQUAL
LANGUAGE

FILLERS CONTRACTIONS

“Uhm” “Kinda”
“ah” “gonna”
“hmm” “wanna”
“you know” “y’all”
“alright” “gotta”
“basically” “lemme”

Fillers are words or phrases that we

use in conversation to fill pauses,
buy time, or add emphasis. They are
often considered informal and are
rarely used in formal writing.

Contractions are shortened forms

of words created by combining two
words and replacing some letters
with an apostrophe. They are
commonly used informal writing and
speech to make language more
concise and conversational.

To understand it deeper, here

are some examples:

So these statements are the

example of colloquial language since
we see that there are fillers in the
statements

So these examples are considered as

colloquial language since we can see
that there are contractions in the
statements.
Slang refers to informal words or
phrases that are used in casual
conversation, often within a specific
group or region. These words are
typically not considered standard
English and can change rapidly over
time. Think of a slang as secret
language used by particular group
people in order to establish group
identity, exclude outsider, or both.
Example of slang expressions:
 Lit (amazing/exciting)
 Bruh (used as an exclamation or
to express surprise)
 Yeet (to throw something with
force)
 Gucci (good/stylish)
