Notes
Albiera, « frost » in Occitan, are a snowy pair of convertible mittens. It starts with a
delicate twisted ribbing detail on the cuffs that is mirrored inside the wrist and merges into
a fun chunky cable that blends in the simple stockinette. A thumb gusset is worked to the
side for a comfortable fit, the stitches are put on hold and picked up later to finish it.
The pattern provides instructions on how to make these mittens convertible so that the
round top of the mitten is detachable and lets you use your fingers. It features a detailed
video tutorial and step by step indications that will allow you to make any mittens
convertible in the future.
Albiera comes in three different sizes, each of them charted : worked in DK weight, it's a
quick and accessible project for an adventurous or intermediate knitter.

Yarn :
You will need
180 m – 196 yds
of DK weight yarn.
Sample was knit with Snaeldan 3ply in Cream White.

Needles :
3.75 mm (US 5) needles
3.25 mm (US 3) needles for the convertible ribbing part
or sizes required to get the right gauge

Gauge :
22 st x 32 rounds per 10 cm – 4" with larger needles in stockinette stitch after blocking

Sizes :
1 (2 / 3)
Finished circumference : 18 (20 / 22) cm – 7 (7 ¾ / 8 ½)"
Finished length from cuff to top : about 25 cm – 9 ¾ " (adjustable)
Finished length from thumb position to top : about 12 cm – 4 ¾ " (adjustable)

Measure your hand at its widest point (under the fingers). For a comfortable fit, make a
size with up to 3 cm – 1 ¼" positive ease. For a snugger fit, you can get closer to your
actual measurements.

note : for the length you will be able to knit a longer or shorter mitten as needed. Pattern
provides indications to know when to start the decreases at the top.

Abbreviations :
– st : stitch / rnd : round
– (RS) : right side / (WS) : wrong side
– m : marker / pm : place marker
– BOR : beginning of the round
– k : knit stitch / p : purl stitch
– m1L : make 1 left, lift the bar between the stitches onto the left needle from front to
back, knit through the back loop (1 inc)
– ktbl : knit the next st through its back loop
– ptbl : purl the next st through its back loop
– k2tog : knit 2 stitches together (1 dec)
– ssk : slip the next 2 stitches knitwise and knit them together through their back loop

– LT : left twist, ktbl the second st on the left needle, then k2togtbl with the first stitch

– C5R : cable 5 right, slip the next 3 st onto cable needle and hold in back, k2, slip the
purl st back on the left needle and p1, then k2 from cable needle

Method for convertible mittens :

You will first insert a contrasting scrap yarn on the palm to mark the opening.
Once the mitten is completed, you will unravel this scrap yarn and pick up the st above and
below the hole.
You will then knit ribbing around the hole and work a small seam to re-attach the sides of
the top of the mitten.
