ProblemSet1-DSS
4. A wide flange beam has a maximum shear of 300 kN. The beam has the
following properties:
d = 350 mm bf = 250 mm
tw = 12 mm tf = 15 mm
• Calculate the shear stress (MPa) at the bottom.
• Calculate the shear stress (MPa) at A of the flange.
• Calculate the shear stress (MPa) at A of the web.
• Calculate the maximum shear stress (MPa).
5. A simple beam has a span of 8.5 m and supports a total uniformly distributed
load of 13 kN/m.
• Determine the location of neutral axis measured from
the top of the beam.
• Determine the Moment of Inertia of the beam with
respect to the stronger axis, Ix.
• Find the maximum shear stress of the beam.
6. A steel beam is made up of a wide flange section whose total depth is 600 mm,
width of the flange is 300 mm, flange thickness of 20 mm and moment of inertia
Ix = 1.16x109 mm4. Its web thickness is 10 mm and has a simple span of 9m.
A 50 kN/m uniform load is loaded throughout its span and 195 kN load acting
at midspan. The allowable bending stress of the beam is 150 MPa.
• Determine the required section modulus without
exceeding the allowable bending stress (mm3).
• Determine the section modulus of the wide flange
(mm3).
