The document outlines essential components for a pre-production portfolio, including a mood board, stylistic influences, and detailed sections on research, project challenges, procedures, and development. It highlights the primary challenge of lighting and coverage for scenes in a pole dancing bar, emphasizing the importance of color and camera choice in achieving the desired aesthetic. Additionally, it suggests including technical details, equipment lists, and a pros and cons analysis of camera options, while focusing on how research informs problem-solving in the filmmaking process.

 Research: 1000 words

 Project Challenges: 400 words
 Procedures: 1200 words
 Development: 400 words

Immediately when I received my role as Cinematographer on our project, Poles Apart, I

knew there was one significant challenge which stood above the rest. That challenge was
how to light and achieve the best coverage of the many scenes which take place in the pole
dancing bar, Siobhan’s Soiree.

The first establishing shot of the Soiree involves our two main characters, Maureen and
Siobhan. Maureen arrives at the entrance expecting to see her usual knitting circle but
instead finds Siobhan working the bar of her newly renovated club. After reading the script I
envisioned this moment as a long, wide tracking shot similar to the style of Babylon (2022)
shot by Linus Sandgren where the camera takes us through the scene of a grandiose party. It
does not follow a specific character but multiple and in order to tell this story in 15 minutes I
knew I’d need to establish multiple aspects of the Poles Apart world in one shot.

(lighting plan for Jalou)

- Talk about blue and pink lighting – link to sexuality somehow? INCLUDE POWER
RATINGS for each light. Say focus on lighting spaces not just shots so we have the
freedom to move the camera wherever and then just add negative fill and bounce
where appropriate
- Say this is also a theme I used when I did the promotional photography for the film. I
find photography helps my cinematogprahy etc. happy to say weve raised our
minimum goal (maybe no need to inclue)
- Then let the colour conversation move onto camera choice, Arri has superior colour
space but Sony more practical (use moodbaords to prove the importance of colour in
the film, say how colour will represent stuff and contrast the two locations
- I want the world to be vibrant and lively (not so much it’s a comic book feel like the
boys but not hyper naturalistic either) maybe say about how I like blues in the
shadows? But need a reason why
- Talk about LUTs and include test footage shot with macbeth chart in essay! How I
made my own LUT (good place to add academic references like X person said to
include depth and these objects in my testing of footage for lut making – maybe
even say I reached out to this cinematographer who said do this. Also academic
people colour graders and how they grade)

difference between Raw and Log

- Camera leads onto Equipment list

- https://pro.sony/en_GB/technology/xavc XAVC retains image information at 4K but

is smaller file sizes for easier workflow

- Include a page of marked up script? In the things you can attatch but isn’t part of the
word count

- Say we want small LEDs as may have to film in smaller spaces for Maureen’s house
which leads onto other locations we have scouted out

- Pros vs cons list of arri vs sony

Q&A
Look at how other filmmakers have done it and relate it to the specific challenges the film
presents. Say you’ve looked at this film and this is what I took from it etc.
Premier to resolve? How. Proxy for 4k editing
Do workflow test, shoot with camera, put into editing software
Red generates own proxies
Book resolve upstairs
Weds afternoons
Booking system – collect morning and then return by 4
Studio 2 Friday ? amazon some stuff

Not a narrative account of everything you’ve done in pre prod its just how you’ve
researched and approached challenges. How youre using the research to solve problems
