BOB MARLEY BIO

Bob Marley, born on February 6, 1945,

in Nine Mile, Jamaica, was an influential
reggae singer and songwriter. He is
known for his music that promotes
peace and unity, as well as his social
activism. Marley achieved global fame
with iconic songs such as "No Woman,
No Cry" and "One Love." He passed
away on May 11, 1981, in Miami,
leaving behind a musical legacy that
continues to inspire generations.

Robert Nesta Marley (February 6, 1945 – May 11, 1981), better known as Bob
Marley, was a British-Jamaican singer, guitarist, and songwriter. During his
musical career he was the leader, songwriter, and guitarist of the bands The
Wailers (1964–1974) and Bob Marley & The Wailers (1974–1980). Marley remains
the most well-known and respected performer of reggae music and is credited
with helping to spread both the music of Jamaica and the Rastafarian movement
(of which he was a committed member) to a worldwide audience.
Among her biggest hits are the singles "I Shot the Sheriff", "No Woman, No Cry",
"Jamming", "Redemption Song" and, along with The Wailers, "Three Little Birds",
as well as the posthumous release "Buffalo Soldier". The compilation album
Legend, released by Island Records in 1984, 3 years after her death, is the best-
selling reggae album in history with 15 platinum records in the United States and
more than 25 million copies worldwide.

In the 70s, Jamaica was experiencing a worsening of its already typical political
violence; the situation degenerated into a street civil war between gangs of
militant gunmen from the two major traditional political parties, the People's
National Party (democratic socialist) and the Jamaica Labour Party (conservative
centre-right). The Jamaican Army and Police took to the streets, but could not
contain the violence between the two opposing sides.
Bob Marley was already an apolitical pacifist in Jamaica at the time, he was also
an established musician and a true promoter of the Rastafarian faith. Bob Marley
decided to participate in a free concert at the National Heroes Park in Kingston, on
December 5, 1976 to promote peace and national reconciliation, and thus help
stop the violence.
On December 3, 1976, two days before Smile Jamaica, Marley, his wife Rita, Lewis
Griffith and manager Don Taylor were injured in an attack by unknown gunmen
inside their home at 56 Hope Road, Jamaica; the attack is thought to have been a
reprisal by political factions who rejected the concert for its alleged support of
Manley's government. Marley was shot in the chest (very close to the heart) and
arm, his wife Rita in the head, Lewis Griffith in the stomach and manager Don
Taylor was also hospitalized for crossing the line of fire. Fortunately, after a while
they fully recovered. Two days after the attack, Marley stood on stage and sang.
When asked why, he said: "People who are trying to make this world worse don't
take a day off, how could I? It lights up the darkness."

In July 1977 it was discovered that acral lentiginous melanoma, a form of

melanoma, had formed on the first toe of his right foot; the lesion found on his
thumb is a typical sign of this type of cancer. Despite his illness, Marley wished to
go ahead with scheduled performances and the cancer was not removed or
treated.
After eight months of unsuccessfully battling cancer, Bob Marley took a plane
back to Jamaica. During the flight from Germany, his vital functions began to fail.
When the plane landed, he had to be rushed to the hospital as he needed
immediate medical attention. He died at Cedars of Lebanon Hospital, now
University Hospital of Miami, on the morning of May 11, 1981, at the age of 36.
The spread of the cancer that began as melanoma on his skin and the metastasis
produced in his lungs and brain were the cause of his early death. The last words
were to his son Ziggy Marley, to whom he told "Money cannot buy life".
