CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

In two years that we faced on the battle of DC COVID-19, there are many changes in every

person's lives, and not only some but most of us in the whole world. When the pandemic of the

COVID-19 come, we need faced mask, we need to wash our hands as needed, use alcohol,

doing social distancing and etc. That we aren't doing it before.

System on Educational mater also changed. Many aspects on it have a big change, and

some Students are really don't know how to cope up with this changes, their readiness in the

new normal school settings is not totally good. Students, readiness is important to consider since

it affects positively, not only learning out come in school but also internal efficiency by reducing

repetition and early dropout, thus contributing to more students reaching the end of school. The

idea of encouraging students readiness aims and making a smooth transition from early

childhood, pre-primary and primary, secondary school and college and to enable students to gain

competencies which could help to be more prepared. All grade 7 student need to be careful with

this virus because they can be infected with the symptoms of COVID-19 and in order for them to

go to school properly they must follow the protocol such as wearing a face mask and you must

be moderately far from the person you are talking, with a distance of 1 meter and you must have

alcohol so that they are always safe while studying.

Parents, students, and schools are the main actors of the programme since they are active

in this integrated approach. The idea is to prepare schools for students and to prepare parents

and children for school. This requires bringing continuity between students home environments

and school programmes, and to ensure smooth transition from one setting to the other.

One important factor to stress about school readiness is the fact that learning outcomes are

linked to students physical and socioemotional well-being. It is this important to pay attention to

nutrition, protection, hygiene and health of children but also of their mother, from the pregnancy

stage and during the early years, where the foundations are built and developmental outcomes

are particularly sensitive to the quality of environmental factors.

One of the most affected is the educational sectors. The COVID-19 pandemic is still

existent today, and there are no specific vaccines or medicines to eradicate this disease. We

need to live to the new normal:if not contained, we need to live with the disease as viruses are

constantly evolving (Denworth, 2020). However, scientists are still on their way in studying and

developing vaccines and presently in clinical trials (Cortegiani et al., 2020; Dong et al., 2020;

Gautret et al., 2020).For almost two pandemic months, most countries around the world have

temporarily closed educational institutions to contain the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic and

reduce infections (UNESCO, 2020).Disclosure has affected more than 1.2 billion learners

worldwide with more than 28 million learners in the Philippines (UNESCO, 2020).Responses

like community lockdown and community quarantine of several countries have led students and
teachers to study and work from home which led to the delivery of online learning platforms

(Crawfordet al.,2020). However, the implementation of online learning pose different risks,

problems and challenges to both the teachers and students, especially in the higher education

institutions (HEIs) (Bao,2020). In the Philippines, there are 10,794 cases as of May 11, 2020

and is still increasing (DOH, 2020) with more than four million cases worldwide (Worldometer,

2020). In response to these situations, educational leaders decided to adopt the new normal in

education. At the basic education, the Department of Education (DepEd) will be implementing

the Learning Continuity Plan (LCP), which will be in effect School Year 2020-2021 and classes

will open on August 24, 2020 instead of June 2020 (DepEd, 2020). In the higher education

sector, the Commission on Higher Education, HEIs were given academic freedom and should

implement available distance learning, e-learning, and other alternative modes of delivery to

students (CHED, 2020). Several universities have opted to implement their own policies

regarding instruction and opening of classes starting August 2020. It will be the new normal in

education and strengthening educational planning and health is a concern to provide quality,

inclusive and accessible education for every student. Hence, this review paper has been

developed in order to provide a clear lens of the new normal in education.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This study will determine the problems encountered of grade 7 students in the conduct

of face-to-face classes in the new normal for the school year 2022-2023,specially if

sought to answer the following questions.

1.What are the profiles of the students in terms of gender and age?

2.What are the problems encountered by the respondent in the conduct of face to face

classes in the new normal?

3.What are the level of awareness of the respondents to the different problems in the

face to face classes in the new normal?

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This study will give the information to the teacher's, for them to be aware for their

students problems in terms of focusing on the new normal settings of education. It will also

gives the idea to the parents, for them to be ready for their child's, on the attitude changed

because of the challenges of their life as a student specially for this time of new normal classes.

For the students for them to take a look on what are the future problems about to face, and for

them to be ready for this problem. And for the future or next researcher,it will guide them and

can give them some ideas related to their research.

SCOPE AND DELIMITATION

The respondent of the study are the Grade 7 of Peñarrubia, Integrated,School .It will be

focusing in the conduct of the face-to-face classes. The researchers aims to identify the

readiness of the student in the conduct of face-to-face classes of Grade 7 student. The

researcher will cover up only the responses of the questions provided by the questionnaires

including the respondent in terms of gender and age.

CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK

The major concept of this study is focused on the problems encountered of GRADE 7

RELATED OF REVIEW LITERATURE

This chapter primarily includes the ideas and different understanding about the new

normal of the grade 7 students of Peñarrubia integrated school. Those that were included this

chapter help to know the different experience of the students in the new normal. This related in

the way of investigating about the readiness of the students in the new normal. They are both

undertaking through analyzing a random sample of the respondents.

The present COVID-19 Jose Z Tria (2020), Pandemic has brought extraordinary

challenges and has affected the educational sectors, and no one knows when it will end. Every

country is presently implementing plans and procedures on how to contain the virus, and the

infections are still continually rising. In the educational context, to sustain and provide quality

education despite lockdown and community quarantine, the new normal should be taken into

consideration in the planning and implementation of the “new normal educational policy”. This

article presents opportunities for responding issues, problems and trends that are currently

arising and will arise in the future due to COVID-19 pandemic through the lens of education in

the Philippines-the new educational normal.

According to Aris Ignacio (2021) The COVID-19 pandemic brought great disruption to

all aspects of life specifically on how classes were conducted both in an offline and online mode.

The sudden shift to purely online method of teaching and learning was a result of the lockdowns

that were imposed by the Philippine government. While some institutions have dealt with the

situation by shutting down operations, others continued to deliver instructions and lessons using
the Internet and different applications that support online learning. The continuation of classes

online had caused several issues from students and teachers ranging from lack of technology to

mental health matters. Finally, recommendations were asserted to mitigate the presented

concerns and improve the delivery of the necessary quality education to the intended learners.

Furthermore, the education system has faced an unprecedented health crisis that has

shaken up its foundation. Given today’s uncertainties, it is vital to gain a nuanced understanding

of students’ online learning experience in times of the COVID-19 pandemic. Although many

studies have investigated this area, limited information is available regarding the challenges and

the specific strategies that students employ to overcome them. Thus, this study attempts to fill in

the void. Using a mixed-methods approach, the findings revealed that the online learning

challenges of college students varied in terms of type and extent. Their greatest challenge was

linked to their learning environment at home, while their least challenge was technological

literacy and competency. The findings further revealed that the COVID-19 pandemic had the

greatest impact on the quality of the learning experience and students’ mental health. In terms

of strategies employed by students, the most frequently used were resource management and

utilization, help-seeking, technical aptitude enhancement, time management, and learning

environment control. Implications for classroom practice, policy-making, and future research are

discussed.

Jessie S. Barrot et al (2021), Education and the COVID-19 pandemic .In December

2019, an outbreak of a novel coronavirus, known as COVID-19, occurred in China and has
spread rapidly across the globe within a few months. COVID-19 is an infectious disease caused

by a new strain of coronavirus that attacks the respiratory system (World Health Organization,

2020). As of January 2021, COVID-19 has infected 94 million people and has caused 2 million

deaths in 191 countries and territories (John Hopkins University, 2021). This pandemic has

created a massive disruption of the educational systems, affecting over 1.5 billion students. It

has forced the government to cancel national examinations and the schools to temporarily

close, cease face-to-face instruction, and strictly observe physical distancing. These events

have sparked the digital transformation of higher education and challenged its ability to respond

promptly and effectively. Schools adopted relevant technologies, prepared learning and staff

resources, systems and infrastructure, established new teaching protocols, and adjusted their

curricula. However, the transition was smooth for some schools but rough for others, particularly

those from developing countries with limited infrastructure (Pham & Nguyen, 2020; Simbulan,

2020).

Charlene L Secuya, Mark N Abdiano (2022) To ensure that all students continue to get a

high-quality, inclusive, and equitable education in the face of the epidemic, educators have a

significant duty. Modular learning has emerged as the most popular distant learning method

because it.
DEFINITION OF TERMS

COVID-19

An acute respiratory illness in human caused by a coronavirus, capable of producing

severe symptoms and in some cases death especially in older people and those with

underlying health conditions.

PROBLEM

A situation, question, or thing that causes different stress, or doubt. It is also a

question that was raised to inspire thought.

ENCOUNTERED

To come upon or experience specially unexpectedly and encounter difficulties.

NEW NORMAL

A year after covid-19 pandemic has emerged, we have suddenly been forced to adapt

to the 'new normal'. Work-from-home setting, parents home-schooling their children in a

new blended learning setting, lockdown and quarantine, and the mandatory wearing of

face mask and face shields in public.

LEARNERS

Learners has 4 types also the predominant learning styles.VISUAL,AUDITORY and

READ/WRITE.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents the research design, population and local of the study, data

gathering instruments and statistical treatment of data.

Research Design

This study utilized questionnaire to gather information regarding the

problems encountered of the Grade 7 students of Peñarrubia, Integrated, School in term of

face-to- face classes in the new normal. The questionnaire for the descriptive survey was

developed by the researchers. The questionnaire is composed of 15 items to gather the needed

information.

Population and Locale of the Study

The first part is the profiles of the students in terms of gender and age then the second part

is the problems encountered by the respondent in the conduct of face-to-face classes in the new

normal. This study was conducted in Peñarrubia, Integrated, School at Poblacion, Peñarrubia,

Abra. The respondents of this study were the whole Grade 7 students of Peñarrubia, Integrated,

School of the school year 2022-2023. The students have 124 enrollees,46 female and 76 male.

Data Gathering Instruments

The data gathering instruments that we used was to gather the Junior High school Grade

7's profile is Likert scale. The researchers used a questionnaire that was drawn to be much

more effective on the type of research that we are having. The researchers also used this
method of data gathering for it is known to have less bias and the least expensive way of

collecting open-minded options that were provided to accommodate open-minded options

related to our study to also avoid any kind of bias in the method of collecting this data. It

also encourages the respondents to be more cooperative due to the fact that it is much more

comfortable to respond and much open to options but still related and specific to our type of

research that the researcher is conducting.

Statistical Treatment of Data

Data analysis involves researchers giving questionnaires to students. Through their

answers from the questionnaires, it will be determined and analyzed what are the real problems

faced by the students during the pandemic and what will be the effect on them. Whatever the

the answers of the respondents will be analyzed by the researchers. This is where the

respondent's answers needed to analyze the data will be known and seen. The results of the

research depend on the answers of the respondents.

1. Frequency count and percentage-will used to interpret the profile of the respondents in terms
of gender, place of residence and socio-economic status

2. Weighted Arithmetic Mean (x) - will used in determine the attitudes towards.
The formula of weighted Arithmetic Mean is:
 X= ∑fx
 N

Where:∑fx Summation of all the products of f and x;
