This Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) defines the general rules and good
practices required for the use of power tools,
This SOP will help supervisors and workers to control and reduce the risk of
injury from the use power tools.
This procedure has been developed in line with the OSHAD CoP 35.0 Portable
Power Tools version 3.1 July 2016.
This SOP is applicable to all AADC staff and contractor workers.

Power tools are categorised with operational power which include electrical,
hydraulic, and pneumatic.
Power tools can be extremely dangerous if they are faulty or damaged or used
incorrectly. Accidents associated with power tools include abrasions, cuts,
lacerations, amputations, bums, electrocution, and Work Related Upper Limb
disorders (WRULD),
All workers involved with the use of power tools shall be trained, be physically fit
to do so, and be aware of the potential risks,

4.0 Responsibilities
The respective section Manager is responsible to distribute this procedure to all
involved parties and monitor the implementation. Added responsibilities:

Ensure a Risk Assessment (RA) shall be carried for
use of respective power tool.
Coordinates and plans the activity with the workers
Ensure that the power tool is fit for purpose and it is
free of defects.
Provides appropriate instruction and guidance on safe
use of the power tool and monitors the implementation
of this SOP.
Workers
Assists in conducting the RA
Conducts check on the tool and identifies any defects
Shall on use power tools according to this SOP and to
the manufactures operating guidelines and instructions
Shall report any damages and defects.
Not attempt to use any tool for which he is not trained.

5.0 Procedure
5.1 Planning and Assessment
5.1.1 Ensure a tool box talk / safety briefing has taken place with all workers as.
required prior to commencement of the job.
5.1.2. All workers shall secure loose hair and / or clothing and remove all jewellery to
prevent possible entanglement prior to the use of power tools.
5.1.3. Ensure that the work area is clear and uncluttered
5.1.4 Make sure the work area is well it, do not use the power tool if you cannot see
the work area clearly.
5.1.5 Task shall only be performed by worker who is trained and competent for that
specific tool
5.2 Power Tools requirement

5.2.2 All tools and equipment shall be used for the purpose for which they are
designed
5.2.3 Visually inspect tools prior to use subject to regular inspection - do not use a tool
if the cord or hoses is damaged or lose.

5.2.4 Ensure that cords and hoses do not pose a tripping hazard.
5.2.5 Where possible hydraulic hoses shall be of the non-conductive type.
5.2.6 Any item associate with the tools is found to be defective it shall be removed
from service immediately and repaired to manufacturer's specifications.
5.2.7 Use tools only with approved accessories and with all approved guards and
safety features in place and must be in a good operational state.
5.2.8 Transferring of tools from lower level to a higher one shall be in an approved
manner such as using a rope or tool bag.
5.2.9 Portable tools shall be stored safely when not used.

Do’s and Don’ts of Power Tools
Check that the power tools are well
maintained and fit for purpose, i.e. it is
appropriate for the job.
Use a tool that has a danger sign or
tag attached to it. Danger signs should
only be removed by an authorised
person / supervisor who is satisfied
that the tool is in a safe condition to be
operated.
Check all the safety measures are in
place - guards, Isolators, locking
mechanisms, emergency off switches

Remove any safeguards, even if their
presence seems to make the job more
difficult.
Use the tools properly and in
accordance with the manufacturer's
instructions.
