The respiratory system is a biological system responsible for gas exchange, primarily bringing oxygen into the body and removing carbon dioxide. Key components include the nose, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, bronchioles, lungs, alveoli, and diaphragm, each playing a vital role in respiration. Proper care involves regular exercise, avoiding smoking, staying hydrated, maintaining a balanced diet, and scheduling checkups.

Respiratory System

– It is a biological system that involves the organs and structures responsible for the exchange of gases between an
organism and its environment.

Functions of Respiratory System

– The primary function of the respiratory system is to bring in oxygen (O2) into the body and remove carbon
dioxide (CO2) from the body.
– Other functions include inhaling and exhaling, and conditioning the air entering the body.

Importance

The respiratory system is important as it allows your body to breathe, taking in oxygen for energy production and
expelling carbon dioxide, ensuring proper functioning of cells and maintaining internal balance.

Parts and Functions

1. Nose/Mouth – the gateway of the respiratory system.

• cilia – hairs that trap foreign materials unnecessary for lungs.

• mucous membranes – moisten the air before it enters.

2. Pharynx or Throat – the pathway for both air and food. (It is located right after the mouth and the nose)

3. Larynx or Voice Box – An organ in the top of the neck involved in breathing, producing sound, and protecting the
trachea against food aspiration.

4. Trachea or windpipe – It is a narrow and cylindrical tube that carries air from the larynx to the lungs.

5. Bronchi- trachea splits into two bronchi which insert to the lungs.

6. Bronchioles – These are smaller airways that branch out from the bronchi and carry air deep into the lungs.

7. Lungs – Organs that are responsible for the gas exchange.

8. Alveoli- tiny air sacs within the lungs where gas exchange occurs. Oxygen from the air diffuses into the
bloodstream, and carbon dioxide from the blood diffuses into the alveoli to be expelled during exhalation.

9. Diaphragm – the major muscle located below the lungs. It allows respiration to occur.

Proper ways to Take care the Respiratory System

1. Regular Exercise
– Engage in aerobic exercises to strengthen respiratory muscles and improve lung capacity.

(Activities like brisk walking, jogging, or swimming can enhance overall respiratory health.)

2. Avoid Smoking and Minimize Exposure to Pollutants

3. Stay well-hydrated

(Stay well-hydrated to keep the mucous membranes in your respiratory tract moist. )

4. Balanced Diet

5. Regular Respiratory Checkups

(Schedule periodic checkups to monitor respiratory health)
