Use of Articles

Omission of Articles (Do Not Use)


❖ We do not use articles before the names of countries, continents, cities, person, months
and days.
Examples :
1. Spain is in Europe.
2. Lucknow is a historic city.
3. I met Ankit.

Note : We use the, before the names of countries or States which include words like Republic,
Union, Kingdom, States
Examples : The United Kingdom, The United States of America

❖ We do not use articles before the names of metals.


Examples :
1. Iron and coal are found in England.
2. Gold is very costly.
❖ We do not use articles before the abstract nouns.
Examples :
1. Truth prevails.
2. Knowledge is power.
3. Honesty is the best policy.
❖ We do not use articles before the names of games, sports.
Examples :
1. I play tennis.
2. They play football.
❖ We do not use articles before the names of relatives.
Examples :
1. Father has gone out.
2. Aunt wants you to see her.
❖ We do not use articles before names of subjects
Example :
1. My sister is good in Science.
❖ We do not use articles before the names of languages and nationalities.
Examples :
1. She is learning French.
2. We are studying Arabic.

❖ Before school, college, university, church, bed, hospital, prison etc.


Example :
1. His dad is still in hospital.
2. We learned English at school.
3. He is at university.

Note : The is used before these words when the reference is to the building or object rather than
to the normal activity that goes on there.
1. I met her at the church. (Here the reference is to the building and not to the activity that is
going on there.)
2. I went to the hospital to see my friend.
❖ We do not use articles before the names of foods and festivals.
Examples :
1. Breakfast is at eight o’clock.
2. He takes sugar with his tea.
3. We celebrate Holi in the month of March.

Note: We use a when there is an adjective before breakfast, lunch, dinner etc. We use the when
we are talking about a particular meal.
Example :
1. I had a late dinner yesterday.
2. The lunch we had at the restaurant was very good.
