Assignment No. 2
Design of Cylinders

Sr. Question
No.
1 Explain the Bore and Length of the Cylinder

2 Explain different types of liners and advantages of liners used in IC engines

3 Explain the function of the cylinder head, Write an equation for calculation of cylinder head with
meaning of each term.
4 Explain Stresses in Cylinder wall, write an equation for it with meaning of each term.

5 The cylinder of a four-stroke diesel engine has the following specifications: Brake power = 10 kw, speed
= 1400 rpm, Indicated mean effective pressure =
0.35 Mpa, mechanical efficiency = 80%, Maximum Gas pressure = 4 Mpa . The cylinder liner and head are
made of grey cast iron FG 260 (Sut =260N/mm2 and µ= 0.25). The studs are made of Plain carbon steel
40 C8 (Syt =380N/mm2) The factor of Safety for all parts is 6.
Calculate:
i) Bore and length of the cylinder liner.
ii) Thickness of the cylinder liner
iii) Thickness of the cylinder head
Size, number, and pitch of studs.

6 A four-stroke diesel engine has the following specifications:

Brake power = 7.5 KW Speed = 1200 rpm
Indicated mean effective pressure = 0.35 N/mm2
Mechanical Efficiency = 80% Determine –
1. Bore and Length of the cylinder.
2. Net and apparent stresses.
3. Thickness of the cylinder head.
Size of the studs for the cylinder head.
