Helpful tips and guidelines

• Content – 15 marks
• Organization – 8 marks (NO THESIS STATEMENT – 3 MARKS, GENERAL
THESIS STATEMENT – 4 MARKS, SPECIFIC THESIS STATEMENT – 5
MARKS AND ABOVE)
• Language -12 marks (don’t make silly mistakes- subject verb
agreement etc.) – OTHERWISE YOUR MARKS WILL BE VERY LOW
• Total – 35 marks
• 21 MARKS IF YOUR WRITING DOES NOT REACH 350 WORDS
Paper 1 Section B: Essay Writing
• Focus on the common types of essay:
• Persuasive,
• Discussion,
• Expository,
• Causes and Effects &
• Compare and Contrast.
• The layout of the essay:
• 5 PARAGRAPHS OR 6 PARARGRAPHS ONLY
• For example: Expository essay (Pros and cons) = 6
paragraphs, (1 intro, 2 pros, 2 cons and 1 concluding
paragraph) **CAUSES AND EFFECTS - SAME
• -Pros only essay – 5 paragraphs will be sufficient
• Takes 5 minutes to brainstorm and mind-map before writing
– to make sure you know what to write and to avoid writing
out of topic, don’t lose marks on organisation.
• Must answer agree or disagree clearly and list out 3 reasons to
support your stand (do you agree or disagree)
• Ways to learn English – 3 ways
• Causes of pollution – 3 causes
• Similarities and contrast – similarities – put together in one
paragraph, contrast – one paragraph one difference, for example:
economy / education, give proper example(s)
• 17/35 – if only focus on ONE PART
• Discuss- teenagers should do part time job
• Can choose to write should and should not
• Should 1 paragraph and should not 2 paragraphs or vice versus
• ***according to the topics, not necessary to show support to any
stand
• Every coin has two sides
• Learn some vocabulary according to themes, for examples:
environment, technology & lifestyle and health (healthy
lifestyle – hot topic).
• Write total words written with bracket at the bottom.
• Restrict your word lengths within 350-500 words (not shorter
and not longer than that)
• Proverbs / quotes (1 / 2 will be enough)
• Vocabulary ! !
• Proofread for consistency, fluency and vocabulary used before
submitting
• Don’t repeat the same vocabulary words, first impression is
important, more powerful words – use first in first few paragraphs**
• Argumentative essay – write in present tense (Bad habits are hard to
break, do you agree? )
• If you don’t write your stand – consider out of topic
• Explore different types of sentences (compound, complex, simple
sentences)
• BRITISH ENGLISH!
A thesis statement consists of two parts:
• THE TOPIC + CONTROLLING IDEAS

• Global warning has serious physical, ecological and economic effects.

• Choosing to study medicine in Russia was a difficult decision because


of language barrier, distance and weather.

• Normally written in 1 sentence only.


• Reading is a waste of time. What do you think? Discuss the pros and
cons of reading.

• Thesis statement:
• Thus, there are pros and cons of reading such as _______________,
________________, _______________ and ________________.
Structure of the essay
• Intro with thesis statement
• Advantage 1
• Advantage 2
• Disadvantage 1
• Disadvantage 2
• Conclusion with summary statement –rephrase on your thesis
statement
