EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
As part of the mandatory requirement for the BBA-II degree, I undertook a two-week community
internship at LUMHS Hospital Jamshoro, specifically in the COD (Central Outpatient
Department). This internship provided me with an invaluable opportunity to gain real-world
exposure in a public-sector healthcare environment. It allowed me to explore the complexities of
hospital operations while developing a deeper understanding of both clinical and administrative
functions. Engaging in this internship not only enhanced my knowledge of healthcare management
but also provided insights into the challenges and dynamics of a hospital setting.
During my time at COD, I was actively involved in observing various healthcare processes, from
patient registration to treatment planning. I shadowed healthcare professionals across multiple
departments, including emergency, pediatrics, and surgery, which gave me a firsthand
experience of how different units collaborate to ensure seamless patient care. I also had the
opportunity to interact with doctors, nurses, and administrative staff, which helped me understand
the significance of teamwork and coordination in a hospital environment. Observing the daily
workflow of healthcare professionals allowed me to appreciate the dedication and expertise
required to manage patient care effectively.
INTRODUCTION
Internships play a vital role in bridging the gap between academic learning and real-world
professional experiences. As part of the BBA-II degree program, completing a community
internship is a mandatory requirement to gain firsthand exposure to workplace dynamics and
practical challenges. This report highlights my internship experience at COD, LUMHS Hospital
Jamshoro, where I had the opportunity to observe and understand various aspects of healthcare
management. The report covers the concept of community internships, an overview of the
organization, and key insights gained during my time at the hospital.
The primary goal of a community internship is to provide students with insights into societal
challenges and professional responsibilities within various sectors, including healthcare,
education, social work, and business. By working in real-life settings, interns not only gain
industry-specific knowledge but also cultivate important soft skills such as communication,
leadership, and adaptability. This experience helps them build confidence and prepares them for
future career opportunities.
The department functions as the first point of contact for patients seeking medical care, offering
consultations, diagnostic tests, and referrals to specialized departments if needed. The
administrative team plays a vital role in scheduling appointments, maintaining patient records,
and ensuring smooth operations. The collaboration between medical staff and administrators
helps in delivering timely and effective healthcare services, reducing patient waiting times, and
improving overall hospital efficiency.
Impact and Community Engagement:- The COD at LUMHS Hospital Jamshoro has a
significant impact on the community by providing accessible and affordable healthcare
services, especially to underprivileged and rural populations. It serves a large number of patients
daily, offering essential medical care without the need for hospital admission. By ensuring that
patients receive timely medical attention, the department helps reduce the burden on emergency
and inpatient services. In addition to patient care, the hospital actively engages with the
community through public health initiatives, free medical camps, and awareness programs.
These initiatives focus on educating people about preventive healthcare, disease management,
and early diagnosis. The hospital also collaborates with government agencies and NGOs to
expand its outreach and improve healthcare accessibility. Through these efforts, COD at LUMHS
Hospital Jamshoro plays a vital role in enhancing community health and well-being.
This section provides an in-depth explanation of the organization where the internship was
conducted, including its history, vision, and mission. Understanding these aspects helps in
assessing the hospital’s role in healthcare services and its impact on the community.
The Liaquat University of Medical & Health Sciences (LUMHS) Hospital Jamshoro has a
long-standing reputation as one of Sindh’s premier public-sector healthcare institutions. Originally
established as a medical college, it evolved into a full-fledged university, providing medical
education, research, and patient care. Over the years, LUMHS Hospital has expanded its
facilities and introduced advanced medical technologies to cater to the growing healthcare needs
of the region
The Central Outpatient Department (COD), where the internship took place, was developed as
a critical unit to offer accessible outpatient services, ensuring that patients receive timely
diagnoses and treatments without hospital admission. The hospital’s commitment to medical
excellence, research, and public health improvement has strengthened its position as a key
player in Pakistan’s healthcare sector.
By continuously improving its healthcare infrastructure and expanding medical research, LUMHS
envisions a healthier society where quality healthcare is available to all, regardless of socio-
economic status. The organization aspires to become a model for public-sector hospitals in
Pakistan and beyond.
Mission of the Organization
The LUMHS Hospital Jamshoro is a leading public-sector healthcare institution that plays a
crucial role in providing quality medical services, medical education, and research. The
Central Outpatient Department (COD), where the internship was conducted, is responsible for
patient consultations, preliminary diagnoses, and referrals to specialized units.
One of the key strengths of the organization is its dedicated medical staff, well-structured
departments, and commitment to community healthcare. The hospital actively engages in free
medical camps, awareness programs, and collaborations with NGOs to make healthcare
services accessible to underserved populations. However, challenges such as overcrowding,
resource limitations, and extended patient waiting times indicate areas where improvements
are needed. Implementing digital patient management systems and increasing medical staff
capacity could help enhance hospital efficiency.
During the internship at COD, LUMHS Hospital Jamshoro, I had the opportunity to gain
practical exposure to the healthcare system and observe various aspects of hospital operations.
My role involved:
The community internship at the Central Outpatient Department (COD), LUMHS Hospital
Jamshoro was a highly enriching and transformative experience that provided me with practical
exposure to the healthcare sector. Throughout the internship, I had the opportunity to observe
and understand the complexities of hospital operations, patient care, and administrative
processes. Engaging with doctors, nurses, and hospital staff, I witnessed the dedication and
teamwork required to manage a public healthcare facility efficiently. This hands-on learning
experience allowed me to develop a deeper understanding of how healthcare services are
provided, the challenges faced by medical professionals, and the impact of public-sector
hospitals on community well-being.
One of the most significant takeaways from this internship was gaining insight into the critical
role of outpatient services in a hospital setting. The COD serves as the first point of medical
consultation for numerous patients, handling a high influx of individuals requiring diagnosis
and treatment. Observing how medical professionals assess patients, make clinical decisions,
and coordinate care within a fast-paced environment gave me a broader perspective on
healthcare management and patient-centered service delivery. Additionally, I gained exposure
to hospital administration, including patient registration, record management, and
operational logistics, which are essential in maintaining efficiency and effectiveness in healthcare
services.
Apart from clinical exposure, the internship also enhanced my soft skills, such as
communication, teamwork, adaptability, and problem-solving. Interacting with patients,
medical staff, and administrative personnel strengthened my ability to navigate professional
environments, handle responsibilities, and work effectively in a structured system. Witnessing the
hospital’s engagement in public health initiatives, such as medical camps and awareness
programs, further deepened my appreciation for the role of community outreach in preventive
healthcare and disease management.
Despite the many strengths of LUMHS Hospital Jamshoro, I also observed some challenges,
including overcrowding, resource limitations, and extended patient waiting times. These
issues highlight the need for improved healthcare infrastructure, better resource allocation,
and digital record-keeping systems to enhance the hospital’s overall efficiency. However,
despite these constraints, the dedication of medical professionals and staff members in
providing quality healthcare services remains commendable.
One of the most pressing issues observed during my internship was overcrowding and long
patient waiting times. Since COD serves as the first point of contact for many patients, the
department often experiences high patient influx, leading to delays in consultation and treatment.
To improve efficiency, the hospital should increase medical staff, including doctors, nurses,
and administrative personnel, to manage patient flow more effectively. Additionally,
implementing a digital patient management system would streamline appointment scheduling,
patient records, and medical history tracking, reducing paperwork and minimizing delays.
Enhancing community healthcare initiatives is another important aspect that requires attention.
LUMHS Hospital actively engages in free medical camps, health awareness sessions, and
preventive healthcare programs, but expanding these efforts can increase accessibility to
medical services for underprivileged populations. Regular outreach programs, health
screenings, and vaccination drives in rural and low-income areas would help in early disease
detection and prevention, ultimately reducing the burden on hospital emergency services.
For future interns, introducing a structured internship training program would enhance the
learning experience. Providing orientation sessions, mentorship programs, and hands-on
workshops at the beginning of the internship would help interns understand their roles and
responsibilities more clearly. Assigning specific tasks, supervised projects, and opportunities
for active participation in hospital procedures would allow interns to gain practical
knowledge and skill development, making their experience more meaningful and impactful.
Lastly, fostering better coordination between medical departments can significantly improve
hospital workflow and patient management. Establishing stronger communication channels
between outpatient services, diagnostic units, and specialized departments would ensure
quicker referrals, efficient treatment planning, and reduced patient transfer delays.
Encouraging interdisciplinary teamwork and collaboration among healthcare professionals
would further enhance hospital operations and service delivery.
