EA_430_Aircraft_Structures_Course_outline

The EA 430 course on Aircraft Structures, taught by Andrew Wisdom Zulu, focuses on aircraft structural design concepts and equips students with knowledge on fail-safety, fatigue, and structural materials. Learning outcomes include the ability to analyze and design structural elements, perform component analysis, and apply concepts from solid mechanics. The course includes topics such as bending, shear, torsion of beams, and structural instability, with assessments comprising a written exam, coursework, and practicals.

EA 430: Aircraft Structures (Course Outline)

Lecturer: Andrew Wisdom Zulu

Email: [email protected]

Department of Mechanical Engineering,

School of Engineering,
The copperbelt University,
Kitwe Zambia.

December 20, 2021

Background and Rationale

The main purpose of this course is to explain clearly on aircraft structural de-
sign concepts of different aircraft components. The course will further equip stu-
dents with knowledge on fail-safety, fatigue, corrosion, maintenance and inspect-
ability, and structural materials..

Learning outcomes
After completion of the course the participants should be able to:
Explain the function and application of different structural elements in lightweight
structures.
From a given problem statement, chose an appropriate lightweight structural
element with respect to functionality and weight.
Analyse and design thin-walled beams and stiffened shells with respect to
strength, stiffness and structural stability.
Comfortably work with concepts from basic courses in solid mechanics,
such as centre of gravity and moments of inertia, as well as more advanced
concepts introduced in this course, such as shear flow, warping and different
buckling mechanisms.
Perform analysis of different aircraft components and interpret the results.
