F1 Mathematics Worksheet

Name:
Topic: Ch6.2 Volumes and Total Surface Areas of Prisms Class: ( ) Date:

1. A rectangular metal prism A with square base is melted to form another rectangular metal prism
B.

(a) (i) Find the volume of prism A in 2x cm

terms of x.

(ii) Find the volume of prism B in 9x cm

terms of x and y.
A
(iii) Using the result of (i) and (ii), or 2x cm
otherwise, express y in terms of x.
3x cm B
y cm
(b) Express the total surface area of prism A
in terms of x.

(c) Express the total surface area of prism B

in terms of x.

(a) (i) Volume of prism A

= (2x ×2x) × 9x cm3

= 36 x 3 cm3

(ii) Volume of prism B

= (3x ×2x) × y cm3

= 6 x 2y cm3

(iii) 6 x 2y = 36 x 3
y = 6x

(b) Total surface area of prism A

= { 2x × 2x × 2 + 4 ×2x × 9x} cm2

= (8x2+ 72x2) cm2

= 80x2 cm2

(c)
Total surface area of prism B
= { 2x × 3x × 2 + 2 ×2x × 6x +2 ×3x × 6x } cm2
=(12x2+ 24x2 +36x2) cm2
= 72x2 cm2

2. A metallic cuboid of volume 624 cm3 is divided into two parts (A and B). Part B is a cube of
base area 16 cm2.

A B A + B

(a) Find the side of the cube.

Let a cm be the length of the cube.

a × a = 16

a =4

The length of the cube is 4 cm.

(b) If the cost of painting is $0.5 per cm2, find the total cost to paint all the faces of the cube.

The total cost to paint all the faces of the cube

= $ ( 6 × 16 ) (0.5 )
= $ 48

(c) Find the length of the original cuboid.

Let y cm be the length of the original cuboid.

16 × y = 624
y = 39
The length of the original cuboid is 39 cm

(d) Find the total surface area of the remaining part of cuboid (A) after the cube is cut off.

Total surface area of the remaining cuboid A after the cube is cut off
= { 2 × 16 + 4 ×4 × (39–4 )} cm2
= (32 + 560) cm2
= 592 cm2

(e) The remaining part of cuboid is melted to form a

triangular prism.
If the base of the triangle is 8 cm and the length of
the prism is twice the base of the triangle, find the
height of the triangular base.
?

Let h cm be the height of the triangular base.

1 8 cm
 8  h  16 = (624 − 4  4  4)
2
560
h= = 8.75
64
The height of triangular base is 8.75 cm

filled. Find the total volume of the chicken soup in m3.

Total volume of the chicken soup

(Figure 1) (Figure 2)

Figure 1 above shows a net which can be folded and sealed to form a plastic, rectangular-
based container with cover as shown in figure 2. The container will be used to hold chicken
soup for a charity sale.

f1math_exch6.2(2)a.docx 3
(i) Find the volume of the plastic container in m3.

Volume of the container

= (0.2  0.15  0.05)m3

= 0.0015 m3

(ii) Find the number of plastic containers needed to hold all the chicken soup if each
of the containers is two-thirds filled.

Number of container needed

2
= 3.6  (0.0015  )
3

= 3600

(c) Find the total cost in making all the containers if the price of each m2 of plastic is $25.

Total surface area of the container

= [(0.05 + 0.15 + 0.05 + 0.15 + 0.04)  0.2 + (0.15  0.05)  2]m 2

= 0.103 m2

Total cost on making all the containers

= $(0.103  25  3600)

= $9 270
