Worksheet 1: Angles of Elevation and Depression

Discussion:
An angle of elevation is the angle formed between the horizontal line and
the line of sight when looking up at an object.
An angle of depression is the angle formed between the horizontal line and
the line of sight when looking down at an object.
Illustrative Example:
A person standing 50 meters away from a tree looks up to the top at an angle
of elevation of 30°. To find the height of the tree, we use the tangent function:

h
Tan (30o) =
50
h = 50 x Tan (30o)
h = 28.87 meters
Exercises:
Easy:

1. A person looks up at the top of a building at an angle of 35°. Identify the

angle.
2. A bird looks down from a tree at an object on the ground at an angle of
50°. Identify the angle.
3. Illustrate an angle of elevation of 40° from a point on the ground.
4. A building is 40 meters tall. Find the angle of elevation of the top of the building
from a point 50 meters away.
5. A person looks down at a car from a 20-meter-high balcony at an angle of
depression of 35°. Find the distance of the car from the balcony’s base.
Average:
6. A person 1.5m tall looks up at a 10m tall tree at an angle of elevation of 30°.
Illustrate the scenario.
7. An observer at the top of a 90-meter building sees a car at an angle of depression
of 60°. Find the horizontal distance of the car from the building.
8. A 12-meter ladder is leaning against a wall at an angle of elevation of 70°. Find
how high the ladder reaches on the wall.
9. A plane is flying at a height of 3000 meters. If the angle of depression to a point
on the ground is 20°, find the horizontal distance.
10. A drone is flying at a height of 50 meters. If the angle of elevation to a person
on the ground is 25°, find the horizontal distance.
Difficult:
11. Two buildings are 150 meters apart. The angle of elevation from the top of one
building (50 meters tall) to the top of another is 40°. Find the height of the
second building.
12. A boat is spotted from a 200-meter lighthouse at an angle of depression of 45°.
Find the distance of the boat from the base of the lighthouse.
13. A balloon is 100 meters above the ground. The angle of depression to a person
standing 120 meters away is 30°. Find the actual distance between the balloon
and the person.

Worksheet 2: Trigonometric Ratios in Right Triangles

Discussion:
Trigonometric ratios are used to find unknown sides and angles in right triangles.
The three main trigonometric functions are:
 Sine (sin) = Opposite / Hypotenuse
 Cosine (cos) = Adjacent / Hypotenuse
 Tangent (tan) = Opposite / Adjacent
Illustrative Example:
A ladder is leaning against a wall, making a 60° angle with the ground. The base of
the ladder is 5 meters away from the wall. Find the length of the ladder. Using the
cosine function:

5
Cos (60o) =
L
5
L=
cos 60
L = 10 meters
Exercises:
Easy:
1. Find the sine, cosine, and tangent of a right triangle with sides 3, 4, and 5.
2. A ramp is 10 meters long and makes a 30° angle with the ground. Find the
height it reaches.
3. A ladder leans against a wall at an angle of 45°. If the ladder is 8 meters long,
find how high it reaches.
4. A tree casts a shadow of 12 meters when the sun is at an angle of 40°. Find the
height of the tree.
5. A wire is tied to a pole and anchored to the ground 15 meters away, making a
50° angle with the ground. Find the wire's length.
Average:
6. A 20-meter tower casts a shadow of 25 meters. Find the angle of elevation of the
sun.
7. A cable is attached from the top of a 30-meter tower to a point 40 meters away.
Find the angle the cable makes with the ground.
8. A ladder leans against a wall at an angle of 55° and reaches a height of 12
meters. Find the ladder’s length.
9. A person is 50 meters away from a 70-meter tall lighthouse. Find the angle of
elevation.
10. A plane is flying at an altitude of 5000 meters. If the horizontal distance from
the observer to the plane is 7000 meters, find the angle of elevation.
Difficult:
11. A bridge is built across a river. Two points are 100 meters apart on either side.
The angles of elevation from these points to the top of a tower on the bridge are
30° and 40°. Find the height of the tower.

12. A drone is flying at a height of 120 meters. A person 300 meters away measures
the angle of elevation as 20°. Find the actual distance from the person to the
drone.
13. A ship is 800 meters from a lighthouse. If the angle of elevation from the ship to
the top of the 150-meter lighthouse is, find using trigonometric functions.
