Relationships in Ecosystems: Energy and Matter for Life

Teaching Ideas

Learning Objective: To understand how photosynthesis provides organic molecules and energy in food webs.
KS3 National Curriculum link: The dependence of almost all life on Earth on the ability of photosynthetic
organisms, such as plants and algae, to use sunlight in photosynthesis to build organic molecules that
are an essential energy store and to maintain levels of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

Success Criteria: • Recall what photosynthesis is.

• Describe the reactants and products of photosynthesis.

• Show photosynthesis as a word equation.

• Explain the importance of photosynthetic organisms for all living organisms.

• Predict how the loss of sunlight would impact on the Earth and its living organisms.

Context: Lesson 1: Energy and Matter for Life

Students will be learning about the process by which plants and other autotrophic organisms produce
their own food. They will also be conducting research to see how this is essential not only for the
plants themselves, but as an energy and nutritional source of other living organisms.

Students will be conducting research, guided by a series of structured questions. ICT resources are
recommended.

Suggested progress of lessons:

Lesson 1: Energy and Matter for Life

Lesson 2: How Do Animals Get Their Energy?

Lesson 3: How Are Animals Connected in a Food Web?

Lesson 4: What is Interdependence?

Lesson 5: How Do Humans Affect Ecosystems?

Lesson 6: How Do Other Living Things Affect Human Food Security?

Main Activities
Photosynthesis Research Task
Computer and internet access is recommended for this activity.
Students can work independently to carry out research and answer questions about photosynthesis in plants.
Using the Photosynthesis Research Questions Differentiated Activity Sheet, students can be directed in their research and
should be able to work independently on the task. An answer sheet is included.
The questions are differentiated to provide varying levels of support for student responses.
Resources for supporting students:
Photosynthesis Word Mat
Plants, Photosynthesis and Ecosystems Glossary
Resources for stretching/challenging students:
Relationships in an Ecosystem Challenge Cards Print Out

Plenary
Photosynthesis Equation Differentiated Sequencing Cards
Students can work in pairs or independently to rearrange the cards to show the word equation for the photosynthesis reaction.
The activity is differentiated, so more able students can match up the chemical formula and build the symbol equation also.

Photosynthesis True or False Quiz PowerPoint

Students can response to the quiz as a numbered list in their books to self- or peer assess at the end of the quiz, or choose the
quiz option for student mini-whiteboard responses and immediate feedback after each question.
